Amidst swirling speculation linking him to the vacant Michigan coaching position, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the Sun Devils, becoming visibly emotional while expressing his deep connection to the program and community. The situation unfolds following the dismissal of Michigan’s previous coach, Sherrone Moore, on Wednesday due to a violation of university policy.
Dillingham, speaking to reporters after a bowl practice in Tempe on Saturday, stated, “I love this place,” before pausing, overcome with emotion. The 35-year-old coach grew up in the vicinity of the Arizona State campus, attended the university as a student, and returned to lead the football team beginning in late 2022.
Contract Talks Underway with Arizona State
While acknowledging the interest from other programs, Dillingham emphasized his focus remains on Arizona State. He revealed that discussions regarding a contract extension are currently in progress. “They sent my agent one after the last game at some point,” Dillingham said. “… I’m not really involved in that. That’s kind of my team. I coach football.” This delegation of contract negotiations underscores Dillingham’s desire to concentrate on his coaching responsibilities.
Michigan’s Appeal and Dillingham’s Response
Speculation regarding Dillingham’s potential move to Michigan intensified late Friday, fueled in part by a surge of support on social media from Wolverines players and supporters. Dillingham acknowledged Michigan’s prestige, calling it “one of the best programs in the country, it’s one of the best logos in the country.” However, he maintained that this external interest does not diminish his loyalty to Arizona State.
“That doesn’t change how I feel about here,” Dillingham asserted. He highlighted the deep personal ties that anchor him to the community, noting, “That doesn’t change that my sister’s my neighbor. That doesn’t change that my parents live three doors down.” He further characterized the Michigan opportunity as “one of the best jobs in America, it’s an unbelievable brand, an iconic brand, so a great opportunity for somebody.”
Success at Arizona State and Future Outlook
Dillingham has achieved notable success during his tenure at Arizona State, leading the team to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024 – the program’s inaugural season in the conference. His overall record at ASU stands at 22-16 across three seasons. The Sun Devils are preparing to face ACC champion Duke in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.
Dillingham has previously been considered for other high-profile coaching positions, including at LSU, but has consistently reiterated his dedication to Arizona State. As Michigan searches for a new leader, other potential candidates have emerged, including Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Washington’s Jedd Fisch, who previously served as an assistant coach at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh.
