Chateau Marmont: More Than Just a Hotel

A legendary Hollywood haunt with a restaurant, the Chateau Marmont continues to draw crowds with its history, mystique, and, yes, its food.

Is the chateau Marmont restaurant worth a visit? Despite the hotel’s reputation for exclusivity, anyone can experience the Chateau Marmont-for the price of a meal. Dinner reservations are key to experiencing this iconic spot.

The Chateau Marmont, a fixture on Sunset Boulevard since 1929, embodies Hollywood glamour.Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Ryan Murphy, and Doja Cat have graced its halls. It’s a place steeped in stories,from the famous to the infamous.

The restaurant, a more recent addition, opened in 2003. Before that, in 1995, current owner André Balazs added Bar Marmont, a cocktail bar down the street, which reopened at some point after the pandemic but remains closed as of writing.

Securing a dinner reservation at the Chateau Marmont requires a bit of planning. Booking two weeks in advance is recommended. I managed to get an 8:45 pm slot on a Wednesday, a relatively easy feat compared to the weekend rush. The reservationist even offered the option of arriving half an hour early for drinks, adding to the allure of the experience.

My previous encounters with the Chateau were more casual: a suite visit with a friend of a friend and a brand activation party. Neither prepared me for a proper dining experience.

arriving on the night of my reservation, the frist checkpoint was the host stand.After confirming the booking, we entered the entrance hall with its faded Persian rugs. Across from the second host stand, lay the lobby bar (separate from Bar Marmont) and the restrooms. The ambiance promised a night of Old Hollywood charm.

I was hoping to savor the bar scene before dinner. Instead, we were seated at our outdoor table.It was a slightly chilly evening in early June, but the courtyard’s enclosed design created an enchanting garden-like atmosphere. Despite several empty tables,the restaurant felt alive.

The comparison that comes to mind is the Soho House in Paris, but even without that frame of reference, the Chateau’s inviting courtyard, with its greenery and varied seating, stands out.

The restaurant’s menu isn’t posted online, but I had an excellent idea of the offerings, which include classics like Caesar salad and the Four horsemen of Hotel Dining: A chicken, a fish, a steak and a burger. Signature cocktails start at $20.

Cocktail Proposal

Consider trying the Tokyo Teese. it’s a unique blend that captures the Chateau’s elegant vibe.

We ordered a Tokyo Teese cocktail ($21) and a dirty vodka martini ($29), and then the food: guacamole and chips ($18), spicy tuna tartare ($33), spaghetti bolognese ($39), linguini and clams ($39), and fries ($12). the menu’s prices place the Chateau in line with other Sunset Strip establishments.

Don’t miss the fries! They’re a simple dish, but perfectly executed and a great accompaniment to any meal.

The food delivered. The guacamole and chips were on point.The nori crisps were a good addition to the not-so-spicy tuna tartare. Both the bolognese and the linguini were faithful versions of Italian American classics.The fries were crispy and well-made.

For dessert, we chose the Nutty Chewy sticky Gooey ($18), a sundae with peanut butter gelato, brownie bites, pretzels and hot fudge. We also ordered Dusk Til Dawn ($22), the Chateau’s tequila espresso martini, and a chamomile tea ($14).

Dessert Highlight

The nutty Chewy Sticky Gooey is a must-try for dessert lovers.It’s a playful and indulgent treat that perfectly caps off the meal.

While no A-listers were present during my visit, a trio of musicians livened up the atmosphere with music that drifted into the courtyard.

On my way to the bathroom, I took in the lobby bar. It’s a cool space, and just like the restaurant, it’s reservation-only.The dim lighting and stylish clientele made me wish we could hang out in the area.

Worth the Hype?

The Chateau Marmont, despite its reputation, is worth the visit. Even if you’re unfamiliar with celebrity culture, the courtyard is a pleasant place to dine.The straightforward menu is solid,the service is excellent,and the glamour is undeniable. Dinner is a chance to experience the hotel’s allure without the cost of an overnight stay.
