Caused by bacteria, diphtheria is a highly contagious infection. It mainly manifests itself as specific angina, which can lead to cardiac or neurological complications and be fatal. If, in mainland France, diphtheria has disappeared thanks to significant vaccination coverage, a serious diphtheria epidemic is currently underway in Nigeria. Thus, between May 2022 and early September 2023, the authorities recorded more than 6,000 cases of infections in the country.
