Director Sentenced for $11 Million netflix Fraud, Lavish Spending

A California court found Carl Erik Rinsch, the director of the unreleased science fiction series Conquest, guilty of electronic fraud, money laundering, and related charges on Thursday, December 12, bringing an end to a bizarre saga of Hollywood excess and alleged deception. The case, which captivated observers in both the entertainment industry and beyond, stemmed from the disastrous production of Conquest,a project initially greenlit by Netflix with a ample budget but ultimately abandoned after years of chaotic development and alleged financial mismanagement.

The Montevideo Mystery and the Rise of Conquest

For years, residents of Montevideo,Uruguay, reported a strange phenomenon – a collective memory of a large-scale film shoot in plaza Independencia involving soldiers and nude extras. This shared recollection, initially attributed to the Mandela Effect, fueled speculation about a secret production. The mystery began to unravel in 2023 when The New York Times published a report detailing the story of Conquest and its creator, Carl Rinsch.

The report painted a picture of a project granted almost unlimited financial and creative freedom by Netflix, ultimately costing the streaming giant over $55 million without a single completed episode. According to the chronicle, RinschS vision quickly spiraled into a “microcosm of the era of wasteful spending” plaguing Hollywood.

From creative Freedom to Financial Ruin

Rinsch’s personal life mirrored the chaos surrounding Conquest. The director was embroiled in a contentious divorce from Uruguayan model Gabriela Rosés bentancor, whom he married in 2014, and struggled with substance abuse. He also publicly espoused increasingly outlandish beliefs, claiming to have discovered a secret transmission mechanism for covid-19 and the ability to predict lightning strikes.

Initially, Rinsch pursued legal action against Netflix, claiming $14 million in damages through confidential arbitration. However, the situation dramatically shifted in March when he was arrested in California, accused of defrauding Netflix of $11 million. The U.S. Department of Justice alleged that the funds, earmarked for Conquest, were diverted into high-risk stock market investments and extravagant personal expenses.

A Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Fraud

The court proceedings revealed the shocking extent of rinsch’s spending spree. After receiving $11 million on March 6, 2020, he rapidly transferred the funds through a network of bank accounts before consolidating them into a personal brokerage account. Within two months, half the money was lost through speculative stock trades. The remaining funds were then channeled into a life of unparalleled luxury, including:

  • $1.7 million in credit card expenses
  • $3.3 million on furniture, antiques, and mattresses
  • $387,000 for a Swiss watch
  • $2.4 million for five Rolls Royce cars and a red Ferrari

“Carl Erik Rinsch received $11 million that was for a television show and gambled it on stock market speculation and cryptocurrency transactions,” prosecutor Jay clayton stated in a press release.”Today’s conviction shows that when someone steals from their investors, we are going to follow the money and hold them accountable.”

Facing Decades in Prison

The 48-year-old director now faces a possibly lengthy prison sentence. He was found guilty of one count of wire fraud (maximum 20 years),one count of money laundering (maximum 20 years),and five counts of participating in transactions arising from specified illegal activities (maximum 10 years each). While the maximum combined sentence could reach 90 years, the actual sentence will be determined on April 17 of next year.

The fate of the few completed episodes of Conquest – originally titled White Horse – remains uncertain, joining a growing list of shelved audiovisual projects like the abandoned Batgirl movie. However, unlike Batgirl, The Coyote and the Road Runner Movie was ultimately rescued from a similar fate. This case serves as a stark reminder of the financial risks inherent in the entertainment industry and the consequences of unchecked ambition and fraudulent behavior.
