Djokovic Secures 200th Indoor Victory, Advances to Athens Semifinals

A commanding performance in Athens on Thursday saw Novak Djokovic reach his 199th tour-level semifinal, continuing his pursuit of a historic 101st career title.

Novak Djokovic continued his dominant form, capturing his 200th indoor win on Thursday at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Hellenic Championship. The Serbian defeated Nuno Borges 7-6(1), 6-4, demonstrating resilience and precision to advance in the ATP 250 event.

First Set Battle, Decisive Tie-Break

The opening set proved a tightly contested affair, with Djokovic facing challenges breaking Borges’ serve. Despite missing three break-point opportunities, the 38-year-old elevated his game during the crucial tie-break. He surged to a 6–1 lead, captivating the Athenian crowd with a spontaneous gesture of running courtside to high-five fans before securing the set.

Momentum Carried into Second Set

Carrying the momentum from the first set, Djokovic delivered a “composed and commanding performance,” according to reports, closing out the match in one hour and 44 minutes. This marked the first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting between the two players.

“It was a very physical battle. I thought Nuno played a high level,” Djokovic said. “I was a bit surprised with how good he played. I think we went toe to toe, most of the match. Just a few points decided the winner tonight and he deserves a round of applause for his performance.” He further emphasized the pivotal nature of the tie-break, stating, “I played a great tie-break in the first set. Not too many opportunities for both of us to break the serve of the other guy. That game was the only game I was able to break him.”

Chasing History: 101 Titles in Sight

Djokovic’s victory in Geneva earlier this year cemented his place as only the third man in history to win 100 tour-level trophies. He now sets his sights on surpassing Jimmy Connors (109 crowns) and Roger Federer (103) as he chases his 101st title this week.

His path to the championship has been solid, having previously overcome Alejandro Tabilo in Athens – a first victory against the Chilean after two prior attempts. Djokovic appears to be in peak form as he prepares for the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals, scheduled to begin on Sunday.

ATP Finals Draw and Semifinal Outlook

The seven-time year-end champion has been drawn into the Jimmy Connors group at the ATP Finals, alongside formidable opponents Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur. However, his immediate focus remains on the ATP 250 event in Athens.

Djokovic will face either Marcos Giron or Yannick Hanfmann in his 199th tour-level semifinal on Friday. Notably, ATP Infosys Stats reveal that Djokovic boasts an impressive 29-0 record in 2025 after winning the first set, highlighting his ability to maintain control once ahead.
