The Organizing Committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games presented the medals for both events and announced that they would have a special protagonist: the Eiffel Tower.

One could not expect less from one of the great icons of the French capital, which is why each medal will be adorned with an original piece of its construction.

According to the president of the Athletes Commission, Martin Fourcade, a search was carried out to find an idea that symbolized “the identity” of the Games. Because of his position, he said, it was “obvious to associate the iconic monument of France and Paris, the Eiffel Tower, with the most prestigious object of the Games, the medal.”

Each Olympic and Paralympic medal is set with an original piece of iron from the monument built by Gustave Eiffel between 1887 and 1889, a process in which certain metal elements have been removed and permanently preserved.

The Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games stated during the presentation that “for the Paris Games, the Eiffel Tower Operating Company allows these authentic pieces of Parisian and French history to find glory again.”

The jewelry house ‘LVMH Chaumet’, recognized worldwide for its craftsmanship, will be in charge of the awards.

For its design it was based on three sources of inspiration: the hexagon (the geometric shape of France and reminder of the commitment of the entire nation to hold a historic Olympic and Paralympic Games), the radiance (which symbolizes both the country’s radiance in the world such as the brilliant performances of the athletes in the events”, and the setting of gems.

In addition to the medals, the Eiffel Tower also inspired the unique design of the ribbons. These will be decorated with the framework of the monument’s construction and will be dark blue, an intense red in the case of the Paralympic ones and a mixture of the first two layers of paint used on the tower.

The reverse of the medals will maintain the tradition of telling the story of the revival of the Games in Greece with the figure of Athena Nike emerging from the stadium that witnessed the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, while the Eiffel Tower will appear next to the Acropolis.

In the case of the Paralympic medals, the other side will be, according to the organizers, “a pure reflection of Paris 2024 and Chaumet’s creative choices.”

To do this, a graphic representation of the Eiffel Tower will be made from a higher perspective that will give the medalists the opportunity to discover it from a rarely seen angle.

Additionally, they will have the words ‘Paris’ and ‘2024’ written in universal Braille so that visually impaired athletes can feel the difference between the three metals.

The Paris 2024 Olympic event will light its torch on July 26 and will run until August 11. Among other peculiarities, in addition to these medals, the Games will use the same logo for the Paralympic and Olympic games.
