For 10 days, doctors at a hospital in the Polish city of Poznan fought for the life of a newborn baby who was suspected of being beaten by his parents.
On the morning of March 26, a 22-day-old boy was admitted in a very serious condition to a hospital in Gozów Wielkopolski, a town in western Poland.
Although there were no external signs of injury, examinations revealed serious internal injuries.
The doctors immediately suspected that it might be domestic violence, writes the Polish publication gorzowwielkopolski.naszemiasto.pl.
Since the health condition of the newborn was very severe and required specialized neurosurgical assistance, it was decided to transport him to a hospital in Poznań.
“When the baby was admitted, the doctors talked to his parents. They were asked if anything unusual had happened to him. They assured them that there was no such situation. Only after the tests it turned out that he had serious internal injuries and the decision was made to transport him to Poznań,” says the director of the Gozów hospital.
The condition of the baby was very serious
The doctors of neonatology in Poznań say that they have not encountered such a case in their many years of practice.
The newborn was brought to them with serious internal head injuries, and the doctors fought for his life for 10 days. Unfortunately, the baby boy expires.
“These are the most difficult moments in the work of doctors. It’s terrifying and it’s hard to come to terms with something like that,” says a doctor at the hospital.
The parents have been charged
The doctors from the hospital in Gozhuv immediately informed the police about the case, which is being handled by the prosecutor’s office. At the end of March, the boy’s mother and father, aged 24 and 25, were detained, bTV reported.
They were charged with abuse of a newborn and causing grievous bodily harm.
Witnesses were also interviewed and medical documentation was secured, which provided the basis for the parents’ detention and charges against them.
They have given explanations but have not admitted their guilt.
The prosecutor’s office has submitted a request to the court for the most serious remand measure, “detention in custody.” It is also possible that the charge will be changed.
