Feature film that has as its protagonist one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, Dorival Caymmi – A Man of Affection takes the viewer on an irresistible journey through the life and work of the singer and composer who revolutionized music in Brazil and influenced generations of musicians, paving the way for movements such as Bossa Nova and Tropicália.

Directed, written and produced by the professor at the International Cinema Academy (AIC) Daniela Broitman (from “Marcelo Yuka no Caminho das Setas”), the documentary is scheduled for release April 25th, the week in which Dorival Caymmi would have turned 110 years old. There are already some tickets planned for female students on technical courses and documentary courses at the school.

Awarded at festivals, the film reveals never-before-seen memories told by the artist himself, family and friends from his inner circle, such as Caetano and Gil.

The Film and the Composer

Dorival Caymmi conquered the world in the voice of Carmen Miranda and established Brazilian music abroad with her first hit, “O que é que a baiana tem?”. Innovating in the way of composing lyrics and playing the guitar, Caymmi became a reference in music and to this day is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Just as he did in his songs, the artist is portrayed in “Dorival Caymmi – Um Homem de Afetos” as a chronicler who narrates the customs, desires, and jokes of his people, but especially his own history.

The film’s script is based on an unprecedented interview in which, at the age of 84, Dorival Caymmi confides and reveals his affection for the simplest things in life. Translating Caymmi’s verses from the director’s sensitive perspective, the film wanders through the warm and vibrant universe of Bahian fishermen, through its African-rooted references, the spirituality of Candomblé, the love stories and elements of nature that have so inspired her work. .

In addition to the musician’s enchantment with the shape of the wind, the orixás, the sea breaking on the beach – present both visually and in the soundtrack –, the narrative is complemented with unusual stories from the children Dori, Nana and Danilo Caymmi; friends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil; former daughter-in-law and composer Ana Terra; grandson Gabriel Caymmi; producer and friend Guto Burgos; and former cook and confidant Cristiane de Oliveira.

Music is an essential element in the construction of the documentary, which shows Caymmi relaxed and having fun improvising performances of “Quem Vem pra Beira do Mar”, “O Vento”, “Sábado em Copacabana”, “A Vizinha do Lado” , “Marina”, among others.

Throughout the film’s production process, which lasted almost five years, filmmaker Daniela Broitman immersed herself in researching life and work in order to get to know the multiple facets of Dorival, musician, father, actor, husband, painter, friend. It was also important for her to find unpublished images and records. “Dorival Caymmi was a very enlightened being, and even though he was introspective and homely, he had many friends and was loved by the public, artists and the press at the time”, says Daniela.

The film is made by Videoforum Filmes, co-produced by Spcine and Canal Brasil, and distributed by Decoloniza Filmes. The documentary also has support for its release at É Tudo Verdade – International Documentary Festival, where it had its world premiere.
