Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada Appeals for Donations to Replenish Shelves

Donations to local thrift stores are critically needed to support vital community programs following the holiday season. Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada is actively seeking public assistance to restock its shelves with essential items, ensuring continued support for those in need.

Urgent Need for Household Goods and Clothing

Following a busy holiday period, Catholic Charities is experiencing depleted inventory at its resale locations. The organization is specifically requesting donations of household items, home decor, and shoes. However, all gently-used, saleable goods are welcome, including clothing and handbags. “We really need household items, decor, and shoes. Certainly, we always take clothing, handbags, you know, any of those things that you are just sort of ready to move on,” a senior official stated. The organization encourages individuals to donate through St. Vincent’s.

How Donations Directly Impact the Community

All revenue generated from the thrift stores directly funds Catholic Charities’ comprehensive programming. These programs include a crucial food pantry, a community dining room, and the Elevating Families initiative, all designed to provide support and resources to Northern Nevada residents. “Donations to thrift translate to helping our neighbors,” the official emphasized.

What Items Are Accepted – and Not Accepted

Catholic Charities welcomes gently-used, saleable goods that can be repurposed and sold. However, the organization is unable to accept certain items, such as old televisions or used mattresses, due to logistical and safety concerns. “When we break them down, and we price them, and we put them on the floor, they actually are gonna generate revenue to help our programs and not just end up in the trash,” the official explained, highlighting the importance of donations that can be readily resold.

Convenient Donation Process

Donating is simple and convenient. Individuals are encouraged to visit one of the group’s thrift store locations, where staff members are available to assist with unloading vehicles. Reno resident Kyra Robinson recently donated items, stating, “We don’t need everything we have, and it’s a good time of the year to clean out our closets a little bit. So might as well give it to someone who could use it.”

Thrift Store Locations and Hours

Catholic Charities operates two thrift store locations in Northern Nevada: one on Glendale Avenue in Sparks and another on 4th Street in Reno. Both stores are open to the public seven days a week, providing ample opportunity for community members to contribute to this vital cause.
