Dong-A ST enters the surgical robot market. It was decided to introduce a surgical robot in Korea that has proven its safety and performance through over 20,000 surgeries. Because ultra-precision surgery is possible, it is expected that the patient’s aftereffects can be minimized and the surgery time can be reduced by more than half.

Dong-A ST announced on the 8th that it signed an exclusive domestic supply contract with Britain’s CMR SURGICAL for the surgical robot ‘VERSIUS’.

CMR Surgical is a company headquartered in Cambridge, England. Versius, a surgical robot introduced by Donga ST in Korea, was first released in 2019. Unlike other robots, it is small in size and is structured in a modular form with three robot arms separated into separate carts. It is said to be highly useful in operating rooms with space constraints as it can be flexibly arranged to suit the surgical method and operating room environment.

Recently, the safety and precision of surgery have been dramatically improved by applying a contrast imaging system (ICG, Indocyanine green) that visualizes areas that cannot be seen with the human eye using 3D HD technology. Surgery can be performed even through a small hole, greatly reducing patient aftereffects and side effects. It has grown mainly in Europe and has expanded into Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. It is said to have completed verification of overall safety and performance by performing more than 20,000 surgeries on areas such as the colon and respiratory tract. CMR Surgical, a robot manufacturer established in 2014, attracted investment from Softbank and Tencent thanks to the success of Versius. Currently, Versius is seeking to expand its presence in the countries it operates in.

Official domestic sales and product shipments are expected to begin in earnest starting next year after going through the licensing process. Dong-A ST expects to become a new alternative in the domestic laparoscopic surgical robot market.

In the case of Dong-A ST, it is accelerating the expansion of its medical device business, focusing on the surgical sector. It is said that the introduction of Versius was also promoted as part of related business expansion. The plan is to provide innovative surgical solutions by securing additional automatic endoscope sutures and new surgery-related products that will be sold starting this year, thereby creating synergy.

According to the industry, the global medical robot market is worth $5.9 billion (approximately KRW 8.0506 trillion) as of 2020. It is expected to grow at an average annual rate of about 16.5%, creating a market worth $12.7 billion (approximately KRW 17.3292 trillion) next year. The domestic market is expected to be worth about 177.4 billion won as of next year.

An official from Dong-A ST said, “Versius is a surgical robot equipped with advanced technology and convenience, and its safety has been verified through actual surgery.” He added, “We expect it to further increase the surgical efficiency and precision of medical staff.”
