The Grateful Dead family is mourning the loss of Donna Jean Godchaux, the band’s vocalist whose distinctive voice graced some of their most iconic recordings. Godchaux passed away on Sunday, November 2, at a hospice facility after a prolonged battle with cancer, according to her representative. She was 78 years old.
A representative for Godchaux described her as “a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit,” adding that “all those who knew her are united in loss.” The family has requested privacy during this tough time, echoing the sentiment of late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert hunter: “May the four winds blow her safely home.”

A Journey with the Dead and Beyond
Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead in 1971 alongside her husband,Keith Godchaux,who played keyboards. Her vocals became integral to the band’s sound during a pivotal era, appearing on landmark albums such as ‘Europe ’72’, ‘Wake Of The Flood’, and ‘Terrapin Station’, as well as numerous celebrated live recordings.

This venture was tragically cut short by Keith Godchaux’s sudden death in a car accident in 1980.Undeterred, Donna Jean Godchaux continued to pursue her musical passion, forming the Donna Jean Godchaux Band and donna Jean And The Tricksters in the 1980s. She later embarked on a solo career in 1998 with a self-titled album, culminating in her final record, ‘Back Around,’ released in 2014 with the Donna Jean Godchaux Band and Jeff Mattson.
