“Dormitory”, a film about the difficult choice between parental duty and personal desire

“Dormitory” tells the story of Ahmet, played by actor Doga Karakas, a 14-year-old trying to fit the ideal image of a son that his recently converted father hopes for. Amid tensions between religious and secular Turks, Ahmet is sent by his father to an Islamic dormitory to learn Muslim values.

The 112-minute film takes us alongside Ahmet on his journey, faced with the difficulty of meeting his father’s expectations while aspiring to make his own decisions.

In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the screening of the film, Nehir Tuna expressed his pride in seeing his work screened at the festival, stressing that “this is the first time that we are presenting the film in the Arab world, a significant moment for us”.

“Being here, sharing my film with such a large audience, it’s incredible and I’m overwhelmed,” enthused the Turkish director, expressing his affection for the city of Marrakech and its prestigious festival.

“Dormitory” seeks to convey a message about the possibility of finding one’s own voice and to illustrate the consequences of parental decisions on the lives of children, explained the Turkish filmmaker born in 1985.

As for Doga Karakas, the protagonist of “Dormitory”, he indicated that this feature film required years of hard work which bore fruit by allowing the film to participate in the official competition of the 20th Marrakech International Film Festival , expressing his admiration for the festival and its organization.

In addition to “Dormitory” (Turkey, Germany, France), the list of films in the running for this edition’s Golden Star includes “Les Meutes” by Kamal Lazraq, “The Mother of All Lies” by Asmae El Moudir , “Bye Bye Tibériade” by Lina Soualem, “Banel & Adama” by Ramata-Toulaye Sy (France, Senegal, Mali), “City Of Winds” by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir (France, Mongolia, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany , Qatar), and “Disco Afrika” by Luck Razanajaona (France, Madagascar, Mauritius, Germany, South Africa) and “Excursion” by Una Gunjak (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, France, Norway, Qatar).

Also in competition are “Notre Monde” by Luàna Bajrami (Kosovo, France), “The Other Son” by Juan Sebastián Quebrada (Colombia, France, Argentina), “Prison in the Andes” by Felipe Carmona (Chile, Brazil), ” Silent Roar” by Johnny Barrington (UK), “Toll” by Carolina Markowicz (Brazil, Portugal), and “Tuesday” by Daina O. Pusič (US, UK).

This 20th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which continues until December 2, will also include screenings in other sections such as the “Gala Screenings”, the “Special Screenings”, the “11th Continent”, the “Panorama”, “Young Audience”, as well as meetings with international cinema personalities.

Placed under the high patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, the Marrakech International Film Festival aims to be a place of expression and discovery for renowned filmmakers from several countries, in order to present and discover their cinematographic works, in an environment of exchange, sharing and cultural and artistic enrichment.
