But the craze for the first preventive treatment for severe bronchiolitis, Beyfortus, risks ending this winter in a mountain of frustration. Faced with greater than expected interest from parents, the Ministry of Health indicated on Tuesday that the monoclonal antibody would ultimately be reserved for maternity wards, in its dosage of 50 mg suitable for infants weighing less than 5 kg. The higher dosage (100 mg) can always be ordered in pharmacies with a medical prescription.
While non-mandatory vaccines generally affect no more than 30% of children, “adherence rates for nirsevimab now exceed 60%, and even reach 80% in certain establishments”, explained the ministry in its press release.
