Douala/Cameroon: United Nations regional workshop on gender equality in the media

Media men and women from the Central African region participated in a training workshop. The aim of this give and take meeting was to think together and find solutions that would promote equality between the two sexes within the editorial team. It took place from August 12 to 14, 2024 in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon and was organized by the United Nations agency in Central Africa (Unoca), in collaboration with the CNUDHD and UNESCO.
Media men and women from Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo Brazza; Congo Kinshasa, Gabon, Rwanda, Saotomé and Principe, Chad and the host country, Cameroon reflect on the promotion of equality between the two sexes within the media. The purpose of this initiative, initiated by the institutions of the United Nations, is to raise awareness regarding the promotion of gender equality in the media, with the aim of strengthening peace and democracy in the Central African region.
This Douala meeting was also under the theme “ Men and Women in the media: equality and responsibility for a press that promotes peace and democracy in Central Africa “. It gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on the place of women in the media sector in Central Africa.
When considering the situation, the participants unanimously expressed that there are real inequalities in almost all editorial offices, especially in the private offices. This Douala workshop, in light of the above; It aims to highlight the skills of women in the media, those who stand out so that they can be sources of inspiration and motivation for young women.
