What’s the latest on the Kingston fire? Kingston Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire near the intersection of King and Princess streets just before midnight on Sunday,December 21,2025. The fire quickly engulfed The Shuroop Sushi Bar and Ramen House, and extended to the adjacent building, causing considerable damage.

According to a release from the Downtown Kingston Business Advancement Area, the fire began at 354 King St.E. and spread through the basement, main floor, and second floor of The Shuroop. The flames then jumped to the neighboring building, home to A-One Clothing and residential apartments.

All residents of the apartments above A-One Clothing were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately eight hours, hampered by the age and construction of the buildings, which featured multiple layers and concealed spaces.

“It was a vrey difficult fire to fight,” said Fire Chief Shawn McKerry at a press conference Monday morning. “The age of the buildings and the way they were constructed presented significant challenges. Our crews did an excellent job containing the fire and preventing it from spreading further.”

The Shuroop owner, David Tenenhouse, expressed his devastation but vowed to rebuild. “We’re gonna rebuild and come back stronger and bigger and better. That’s our plan.”

The fire also forced the temporary closure of Chez Piggy restaurant, located nearby in the Rochleau Court laneway, due to smoke damage. The restaurant announced on social media that it would remain closed until further notice while they assess the situation.

Fire crews remained on scene midday Monday, december 22, 2025, continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
