On December 28, 2025 in Rabat, an official agreement was signed with the African Volleyball confederation, establishing the Democratic Republic of Congo as the host country of the 2026 African Men’s Championship, a competition with high continental and international stakes.

An agreement was signed on December 28, 2025 at the headquarters of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) in rabat, Morocco, formalizing the designation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as host country of the African Men’s Volleyball Championship, scheduled for September 2026. This commitment formally binds the continental body and the Congolese authorities for the organization of one of the major events in African sport.

Did you know? – The African Men’s Volleyball Championship draws teams from across the continent, serving as a qualifier for major international tournaments like the Olympics and the World Championship.

Today, we are in the process of democratizing volleyball and going almost everywhere in the seven zones and then, why Congo DRC? because it is evolving upwards, because there is a strong will from the head of State with the entire government who wants to host these competitions and also because there is a fabulous public who will support the event.

Bouchra Hajij, President of the African Volleyball Confederation – Morocco

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the president of the CAVB, Ms. Bouchra Hajij, and the president of the Congolese Volleyball Federation (FEVOCO), Christian Matata, surrounded by several African leaders. Speaking after the act, Matata highlighted the high-level institutional and political support the project benefits from, confirming the direct involvement of the highest authorities in the DRC.

Pro tip – hosting major sporting events can boost a country’s tourism and infrastructure, but requires significant investment and logistical planning.

It is a source of pride for me as President of the Congo Volleyball Federation and this competition was requested by the high hierarchy of the country, the President of the Republic thru the Minister of Hope. Two years ago, we were able to organize with great satisfaction the Games of the francophonie which allowed us to have modern infrastructures. Beyond this competition, the Head of state instructed the Minister of sports so that we do not only affect the participants of competitions elsewhere but that the country, given that it is in the center of Africa, can be a country which will begin to host major competitions.

Christian Matata, President of the Congolese Volleybal
