“My world is based on the fact that the rules are followed, with absolute exceptions. And from the beginning, the Russian occupiers in Ukraine have ignored all the rules, all the obligations they voluntarily accepted under international law,” said the chairwoman of the State Office for Nuclear Safety on to the debate of the Gift for Putin initiative raising funds for weapons for Ukraine.

March 4, 2022. The day nuclear engineer Dana Drábová’s world collapsed. “I thought that it was impossible for someone to attack a nuclear power plant in a targeted manner. I was stupid, naive, because they had already attacked far more humanitarianly sensitive targets before,” Drábová described in an interview with Svetlana Witowská and Jindřich Šídl the shock that came during the shelling of Zaporizhia experienced nuclear power plants.

What she was experiencing at that moment was not fear – according to her, power plants are built to withstand a lot. “But how do you want to exist in a world where there are no rules,” she responded to the question with a rhetorical question. Drábová then also dealt with the possible consequences of detonating the Kachovská Dam. Since at that time the reactors of the power plant had already been shut down, the need for cooling water was not as high, thus reducing the chances of a disaster in the event of a significant attack.

However, according to her, it would be another humanitarian disaster, both for the Ukrainians and for the Russians, whose border is close. “Nevertheless, I am convinced that it is not the slightest intention of Russia to do something like this for a simple reason – follow the money (follow the money, note ed.). The Russians want to sell their nuclear technology to the countries of the so-called global south. And if, God forbid, something happens in any nuclear power plant in the world, the core is dead and they have nowhere to sell, because nothing will be built,” Drábová summarized at the Gift for Putin Initiative event “Go home, Ivan”, which took place August 21 on the occasion of the anniversary of the occupation by the Warsaw Pact troops.
