Drama Unfolds as Bodø/Glimt Falls Short Against Rosenborg Despite Late Controversy

– I have seen it enough times. It is very simple. It is a penalty and a red card. Then I have commented on it, says a frustrated Glimt coach, Kjetil Knutsen to NRK after the match.

He refers to the situation in stoppage time after Rosenborg had taken the lead.

Bodø/Glimt went straight into attack. Rosenborg’s Sverre Nypan threw himself into a tackle with his legs extended. Philip Zinckernagel flew into the air, but referee Mohammad Usman Aslam believed Nypan was on the ball first.

– I am well positioned. I see that Sverre Nypan is on the ball. Then contact with the foot, but not enough to blow for a penalty, says Aslam to NRK.

– This cannot be discussed. It is absolutely unbelievable, said a very dissatisfied Knutsen to TV 2 just after the match ended.

Nypan himself believes it was correct to let the game continue.

– I go in quite hard. A bit inexperienced to go in with both legs, but it would be wrong to award a penalty when I hit the ball, says Nypan.

Strong winds affected the match

Bodø/Glimt has been dominant in Europe lately. Last Wednesday, they secured seven points from three matches in the Europa League. On Monday evening, it was time for a match on home soil.

The yellow-greens faced Rosenborg to conclude the 26th round of the Eliteserien 2024.

Bodø offered, as usual, five degrees Celsius, precipitation, and a small gale from the west, with gusts of 20 m/s – heavy headwind for the home team in the first half, in other words.

After a calm start to the match, RBK’s Edvard Tagseth managed to secure a lead in the 36th minute – albeit somewhat short-lived.

Barely five minutes later, Fredrik Bjørkan was on the ball, which found its way into the net after a chaotic scene in the Trønder box. It was 1–1 at Aspmyra after the first 46 minutes of play.

Short-lived lead

Knutsen’s army was on the offensive when the second half kicked off, with the tailwind behind them.

The match presented several good chances for the home team, but five minutes in, it was Philip Zinckernagel who secured a temporary lead after an assist from Sondre Fet.

But the lead did not last long. After 56 minutes played, Adrian Pereira placed the ball in the net, and once again it was even between the northerners and the Trønders.

After the equalizer, Glimt continued to apply pressure. Jens Petter Hauge missed a huge opportunity when he received a brilliant cross from Philip Zinckernagel. Alone five meters from the back post, the winger could have finished on the first touch but chose to take a touch, allowing RBK keeper Tangvik to intervene.

90 minutes, and two additional minutes later, it was 2–3, after Noah Sashah placed the ball in the net.

Towards the end, both teams had good chances. In injury time, Glimt thought they had equalized, but Tangvik again delivered a tremendous save.

Prior to that, Glimt wanted a penalty, but the home team did not receive a hearing from the referee, much to their dismay after the match ended.

– It’s heating up in Bergen city!

The loss at Aspmyra means that the gap between the yellow-greens and Brann remains the same, which for Glimt means that the Bergen club is uncomfortably close as four matches remain.

– The title race is fully open, says TV 2’s football expert Jesper Mathisen.

– What a triumph, what a team, what a keeper they have in Sander Tangvik. Now Bodø/Glimt is heading to Molde this weekend, Brann is two points behind. It’s heating up in Bergen city, Mathisen further stated.

In the next round, Glimt will face a tough match against Molde. Brann meets relegation-threatened Odd away.

– We are looking forward to it, says the Glimt coach.

– Is the title race closer now?

– Definitely. But we can handle that as well, responds Knutsen.

After 26 played matches, the home team sits at the top of the table with 54 points, followed by Brann with 52 points. Rosenborg, for their part, is recorded with 43 points, climbing past Fredrikstad to 5th place.
