France to Roll Out Pink License Plates in January to Combat Vehicle Fraud

A new color scheme for provisional vehicle registrations aims to drastically reduce errors and fraud related to temporary license plates, offering increased clarity for law enforcement.

France is set to introduce pink license plates for vehicles with provisional registrations beginning January 1st, 2026. The move is a direct response to growing concerns about fraud and misidentification stemming from the current system, where temporary plates begin with the designation “WW.”

Currently, when a vehicle is purchased, whether new or used, owners often require a temporary license plate while completing the necessary registration formalities. These “WW” plates are frequently reassigned to multiple vehicles, creating a system ripe for errors. As one industry expert explained, “If customer A always keeps his temporary plate and never changes it, in a few months, another customer will have the same plate, and all it takes is for customer A to speed, for example, and it will be customer B who will receive the fines.”

The new pink plates will also feature a key addition: a clearly visible expiration date printed directly on the plate itself. This enhancement will allow law enforcement to quickly and easily verify the validity of a provisional registration. “The police will immediately see pink, the validity date of the license plate and will therefore be able to know if the vehicle is in violation or not,” stated a spokesperson for the 40 million motorists association.

The decision to use pink was deliberate, as it is a color that has never previously been used for vehicle registrations in France. This ensures immediate recognition and distinguishes the provisional plates from standard, permanent registrations. The initiative aims to streamline enforcement and protect drivers from receiving penalties for infractions committed by others using the same temporary plate.

This change represents a significant step towards modernizing vehicle registration and improving road safety in France.
