DRCONGO/ Opening of the UCESA workshop on climate mobility in Africa

The activities of the workshop on climate mobility in Africa were officially launched in Kinshasa. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean Michel Sama Lukondé. Nicaise Mouloumbi, Executive President of the Network of Civil Society Organizations for the Green Economy in Central Africa, was asked for his expertise in the absence of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council of Gabon. He spoke about the importance of this collaboration and joint efforts to respond to climate change.

Several objectives were on the agenda for this meeting in Kinashsa. It is :

– strengthen continental collaboration, which is essential to enable the advancement of green growth, including the interconnectivity of regional and continental networks, and accelerate the operationalization of the agreement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) ;

– advance green industrialization across the continent by prioritizing energy-intensive industries to trigger a virtuous cycle of renewable energy deployment and economic activity, with particular emphasis on the added value of natural resources Africa;

– integrate climate, biodiversity and oceans programs into national plans and processes to ensure their contribution to sustainable development, livelihoods and sustainability goals, and increase the resilience of local communities, areas coastal and national economies;

– identify, prioritize and integrate adaptation into policymaking and development planning, including in the context of national plans and nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

The in-depth study launch workshopdeep-dive” on climate mobility in the DRC, which took place on Tuesday September 27, 2023 in Kinshasa on the sidelines of the UCESA General Assembly. It was part of the project on climate mobility in Africa whose aim is to help countries anticipate and plan for climate migration as well as its consideration in development policies.

It should be noted that the Union of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions of Africa (UCESA) contacted Nicaise Mouloumbi, Executive President of the Network of Civil Society Organizations for the Green Economy in Central Africa for his expertise in absence of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council of Gabon. This means understanding the need to rehabilitate this institution in Gabon.

MTM
