Goddard ultimately stepped away from a showrunner role on Netflix’s “Daredevil” after a brief stint and the underperformance of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in 2014 led Sony to reassess its strategy and eventually forge a deal with Marvel Studios for a Spider-Man reboot.
The Sony Hack’s Impact on “Sinister Six”
Goddard revealed that the 2014 Sony Pictures hack played a significant, and somewhat surreal, role in the film’s demise. “I had a big Spider-Man movie about the Sinister Six go down since of the Sony hack,” he told Variety. “My office was right on the lot, and I saw the FBI swarm in and the helicopters fly over the studio. I was sad about it, but there was literally nothing I could do to change the course of events. I suppose it was better than if they hadn’t liked the script.” The hack, a major cybersecurity breach, exposed a trove of internal Sony documents, including details about potential film projects and character rosters.
