Drink Tea for MND: Ireland Campaign Raises Funds for Motor Neurone Disease Support

by Grace Chen

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is calling on communities across Ireland to “put the kettle on” this March for its annual ‘Drink Tea for MND’ campaign, a vital fundraising initiative supporting those living with this devastating disease. The campaign aims to raise crucial funds for the more than 470 families currently navigating life with Motor Neurone Disease in Ireland.

This year’s campaign is particularly poignant, featuring Lorraine Kelly Donnelly, a 51-year-old mother from Dublin, as its ambassador. Lorraine received a diagnosis of MND in July 2025, a moment she describes as life-altering for her and her family – husband Cormac, and sons Simon (18) and Dylan (14). “On the 30th of July 2025 our lives changed forever,” Lorraine shared. “Finding out that I had Motor Neurone Disease had a devastating effect on all of us. It was not the news we were expecting and there is still so much we don’t grasp about what lies ahead. But we are taking one day at a time.”

Finding Strength and Support

Despite the challenges, Lorraine is determined to live life to the fullest. She emphasizes the invaluable support she’s received from the IMNDA and the MND team at Beaumont Hospital. “The support and guidance have been invaluable to me and my family,” she said. Lorraine continues to work in Supply Chain in the biopharmaceutical sector and actively participates in clinical trials, hoping to contribute to a better understanding of the disease and potential future treatments. “If I can help in any small way to understand this illness more, and support even one person in the future, it will be worthwhile,” she explained.

Lorraine’s story embodies a powerful message of resilience. She remains committed to enjoying life’s simple pleasures – attending rugby matches with her younger son, concerts with her older son and sisters – and maintaining a sense of normalcy amidst the uncertainty. “I am determined to keep living my life,” she affirmed. “I will continue to fight MND for as long as I can. I have a lot to live for and I will never give up.”

The Impact of Community Fundraising

The ‘Drink Tea for MND’ campaign isn’t just about raising money. it’s about highlighting the critical role of community support and the IMNDA’s specialist neurology nurses. These nurses provide essential care and practical assistance to families in their homes throughout Ireland. Charlene, a specialist neurology nurse with the IMNDA serving Donegal and surrounding counties, witnesses firsthand the impact of fundraising efforts.

“Every day I travel to help care for people and families living with MND and I observe exactly how much a cup of tea can really mean and the comfort it can bring,” Charlene explained. “MND is a difficult, life-limiting disease, and it can all happen so fast. One day and one diagnosis, and everything changes. As nurses visiting people in their homes, we see the impact this has on families. But because of the public’s support, People can be there. That means providing regular home visits, care, and guidance when it’s needed most.”

How to Get Involved

Funds raised through ‘Drink Tea for MND’ directly support access to specialist nursing care, essential equipment, advocacy services, and guidance for families throughout their journey with MND. The IMNDA is encouraging individuals, schools, workplaces, and community groups to sign up to host a tea party – big or small – anytime during March. Registration is available at www.drinkteaformnd.ie.

Hosting an event is simple: sign up online, choose a date, invite guests, and enjoy a cup of tea while collecting donations. Whether it’s a gathering around the kitchen table, a school bake sale, or a larger community event, every contribution makes a difference.

Lorraine Kelly Donnelly’s message is clear: “If you’re thinking about hosting a tea party, please do it. Your support means families like mine don’t have to face this alone.”

The IMNDA’s Drink Tea for MND campaign kicks off this March, offering a simple yet powerful way to support individuals and families affected by Motor Neurone Disease. To register or learn more, visit www.drinkteaformnd.ie.
