The DS Penske Formula E team is expanding its driver lineup, adding Daniil Kvyat and Nikita Bedrin; Daniil Kvyat, a seasoned Formula 1 veteran, and Nikita Bedrin, a rising star, will both contribute to DS Penske’s efforts.
Bedrin Joins Penske Driver Development Program
Nikita Bedrin has made a name for himself in international karting. He dominated the 2020 WSK Super Master Series (OK), winning heats, qualifying sessions, prefinals, and finals in the last two rounds.
in 2024, he secured his first FIA Formula 3 sprint Race victory, showcasing his potential in junior single-seater racing.
Bedrin will work with the DS PENSKE engineering team as part of the Penske driver Development Program, contributing to simulator development. He’ll also gain insights into the demands of electric racing.
Phil Charles, Deputy Team Principal, saeid, “We’re thrilled to welcome Nikita into our development structure. His talent is undeniable, and we believe he has the mindset and dedication to thrive within the DS PENSKE environment.”
Kvyat Returns to Formula E Testing
Kvyat, 30, has participated in rookie sessions before, including the Rookie Test in Berlin with NIO 333. He also tested the DS E-TENSE FE25 during the FP0 session at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit earlier this season.
Kvyat’s resume includes multiple Formula 1 seasons with Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso.
The team says that Kvyat “brings a wealth of knowlege and expertise to the DS PENSKE squad, with podium finishes and years of experience in high-pressure race environments.”
The Changing Role of Experience in Formula E
The addition of Daniil Kvyat to DS Penske-a driver with meaningful Formula 1 experience-highlights a interesting shift in Formula E. While the series initially attracted drivers from various motorsports backgrounds-including those with and without Formula 1 experience-the role of seasoned veterans is evolving, and teams are recognizing the value of their expertise. kvyat’s experience in high-pressure race environments, mentioned earlier, will undoubtedly be beneficial.
What exactly does Kvyat’s role entail? It extends beyond simply driving the DS E-TENSE FE25. Kvyat, along with Bedrin, will contribute to the simulator development, which is crucial for honing car setups and race strategies. The simulator allows teams to test numerous variables without the expense and time commitment of track runs.
This move aligns with a broader trend in Formula E: the rise of data-driven performance. Teams are investing more in sophisticated data analysis and simulation tools to gain a competitive edge.Kvyat’s experience with high-performance cars offers a unique advantage in understanding car behavior and providing feedback to the engineers. This helps refine the simulation models.
The addition of a veteran such as Kvyat complements the emphasis on young talent within the DS Penske team, as seen with Nikita bedrin. This strategic blend of experience and emerging talent can enhance team performance and potentially give younger drivers access to mentorship.
But what other roles does a Formula E driver play? Consider the following:
- performance Optimization: Drivers must master energy management, a critical element in formula E, as it directly impacts race strategy.
- Car Development: Provide detailed feedback to improve the car’s performance, including improving its efficiency.
- Team Collaboration: Accomplished drivers are expected to work with engineers and other team members.
