Dublin Christmas Eve Busk Draws Crowds, Supports Homeless Services

A beloved annual tradition, the Christmas Eve busk in Dublin City, drew hundreds of attendees on Sunday, December 24th, to raise funds for the Dublin Simon Community. The event, now in its 15th year, featured a performance by Glen Hansard, the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter who initiated the event in 2010.

A Festive Tradition for a Vital Cause

The busk commenced at 5 p.m. outside the Gaiety Theatre, located off Grafton Street, quickly becoming a focal point for festive cheer and charitable giving. According to a senior official with the Dublin Simon Community, the event has evolved into a cherished seasonal ritual for the city.

“We’re incredibly grateful to him and all of the artists who lend their talents to us to help raise money to support our life-saving and life-changing services,” the official stated.

The event’s enduring popularity is evidenced by the impressive roster of musicians who have participated over the years, including Dermot Kennedy, Bono, and the Coronas. This year’s turnout underscores the community’s commitment to supporting those experiencing homelessness during the holiday season.

Addressing a Critical Need

The Dublin Simon Community provides crucial services to individuals experiencing homelessness, and the funds raised through the Christmas Eve busk are particularly vital during the winter months. A senior official emphasized the increased challenges faced by those without housing during this time of year.

“Christmas can be a particularly tough time of year for those experiencing homelessness,” they said. “If you’re in a position to help out, please consider donating to us while you enjoy our special Christmas concert.”

The annual busk serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community support and the ongoing need to address homelessness in Dublin. It’s a testament to the power of music to unite people and inspire generosity, offering hope and assistance to those who need it most.
