Dundalk Snatch Late Draw Against Shamrock Rovers Despite Red Card

TALLAGHT – Danny Mullen’s dramatic 90th-minute goal salvaged a point for Dundalk against reigning champions Shamrock Rovers at a rain-swept Tallaght Stadium on Monday night. The late equalizer, coming after a red card for Dundalk’s Vincent Leonard, capped a spirited performance from the visitors and ensured a 1-1 draw in their rearranged Premier Division tie. The result marks Dundalk’s third consecutive draw to begin the season, but one that feels particularly satisfying given the circumstances.

The match, originally scheduled as the season opener, was postponed due to inclement weather. Roberto Lopes had given Rovers the lead in the 19th minute, and the sending off of Leonard in the 76th minute appeared to seal the victory for Stephen Bradley’s side. However, Ciaran Kilduff’s Dundalk side refused to yield, and Mullen’s late intervention sparked jubilant scenes amongst the travelling support of approximately 600 fans. This dundalk snatch tallaght draw was a testament to their resilience.

Both sides made significant changes to their starting lineups from their respective Friday night fixtures. Rovers, fresh off a convincing win over St Patrick’s Athletic, handed a debut to recent signing Tunmise Sobowale at right-wingback, one of eight alterations made by Bradley. Dundalk also rang the changes, with five new faces in the starting eleven, including a place on the bench for former Rovers players Keith Buckley and Rob Cornwall.

The visitors began brightly, with Declan McDaid testing Ed McGinty in the Rovers goal early on. However, Rovers soon settled and began to exert their dominance, forcing a series of corners before Lopes broke the deadlock. Jack Byrne delivered a pinpoint free-kick, which Lopes expertly headed past Conor Kearns, giving the champions the lead.

Second-Half Drama and a Crucial Red Card

Rovers almost doubled their advantage five minutes after the restart, with Michael Noonan denied by a smart save from Kearns. Graham Burke, enjoying a lively first half, was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet in the 38th minute, heading the ball against the side of his head from close range. Dundalk, the First Division champions last season, began to find their rhythm in the second half, creating several opportunities. Gbemi Arubi showed strength to hold off Lee Grace, setting up Ronan Teahan, but his effort lacked power. Arubi also headed wide, and captain Daryl Horgan fired a free-kick narrowly off target.

However, Dundalk’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a significant blow when Vincent Leonard received a straight red card in the 76th minute. Referee Aaron O’Dowd deemed the Republic of Ireland Under-17 international, who is set to join Norwich City in the summer, the last man and showed him a red card for pulling back Aaron Greene. The dismissal left Dundalk with ten men and forced them to defend resolutely.

Mullen’s Late Strike Secures a Point

Despite being a man down, Dundalk continued to press, and their persistence paid off in the dying moments. Matt Healy inadvertently headed the ball over his own crossbar in the 89th minute, resulting in a corner. Rob Burns delivered a dangerous corner into the box, and Danny Mullen was on hand to bundle the ball into the net from close range, sparking wild celebrations from the Dundalk supporters. The goal was a fitting reward for a determined performance from Kilduff’s side.

The late goal ensured that Dundalk maintained their unbeaten start to the season, although they will be looking to convert these draws into victories as the campaign progresses. For Shamrock Rovers, it was a frustrating night, having been denied victory by a late goal for the third consecutive game. The champions will undoubtedly look to bounce back in their next fixture.
