Raiola Commits to Oregon, Setting Stage for Potential Quarterback Competition

Oregon has landed a significant transfer commitment from Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola, announced Monday, bolstering their quarterback room as they await a decision from current starter Dante Moore regarding the NFL draft.

The Ducks acted decisively to secure Raiola, a former five-star recruit, despite Moore’s continued consideration of his professional options. This move suggests Oregon is preparing for all possibilities and potentially positioning Raiola as Moore’s backup, with the possibility of a redshirt season.

Moore’s NFL Future Remains Undecided

Moore, currently ranked as the No. 2 player on ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest Big Board, could be selected as high as No. 2 overall if he declares for the draft. Following Oregon’s 56-22 loss to Indiana in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Moore indicated to reporters that he had not yet made a final decision about his future.

The uncertainty surrounding Moore’s status prompted Oregon to proactively address the quarterback position, especially considering the recent departures of backups Austin Novosad and Luke Moga to the transfer portal.

Raiola’s Path to Eugene

Raiola arrives in Eugene recovering from a broken right fibula sustained during a November 1st loss to USC. Prior to the injury, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound sophomore showcased his talent, completing 72.4% of his passes for 2,000 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions over nine games.

He initially joined Nebraska as the No. 11 overall recruit in the 2024 ESPN 300, flipping his commitment from Georgia in December 2023. The son of former NFL center Dominic Raiola, a Nebraska Football Hall of Fame inductee, Raiola quickly made an impact for the Cornhuskers. He led all FBS true freshmen with 2,819 passing yards in 2024, guiding Nebraska to its first bowl game since 2016 and a 6-2 start to the season.

Implications for Oregon’s Offense

Should Moore opt for the NFL, Raiola would be poised to take the starting role under coach Dan Lanning. He possesses three years of eligibility remaining, having not redshirted during his time at Nebraska. Moore followed a similar trajectory, redshirting in 2024 behind starter Dillon Gabriel after transferring from UCLA.

Despite being eligible for the draft as a redshirt sophomore, Moore has only made 20 career college starts across his time at Oregon and UCLA. This relative lack of experience could factor into his decision. Moore earned third-team All-Big Ten honors this season, finishing second in the conference with 3,721 total yards, 32 total touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The addition of Raiola provides Oregon with a highly-touted quarterback with significant potential, ensuring stability and competition within the program as they navigate the evolving landscape of college football.
