Federal Police Gain Access to Digital Prescriptions via New Healthcare Platform

Germany’s Federal Police are now able to utilize the country’s new electronic health card (eGK) system for digital prescriptions, expanding the rollout of the Telematics Infrastructure (TI) to include a crucial segment of public service workers. The integration, effective since April 2025, marks a significant step toward modernizing healthcare access for law enforcement personnel.
Expanding Digital Healthcare Access
The move builds upon the existing availability of the eGK and insured person master data management (VSDM) systems for Federal Police members. Now, officers receiving prescriptions from their doctors can redeem them electronically through the eGK, dedicated mobile applications, or even a traditional printed format at pharmacies. Previously, all prescriptions operated under the established “Pattern 16” system.
This expansion signifies a broader push to digitize healthcare processes within Germany, aiming for increased efficiency and improved patient care. The implementation for the Federal Police serves as a key test case for wider adoption across other government institutions.
Gematik App Update Facilitates Access
The Gematik app, central to the TI, has been updated to accommodate the unique insurance status of Federal Police officers. “There is now an additional button when selecting the type of insurance in the app for both iOS and Android: ‘Differently insured’,” a Gematik representative stated. This addition ensures seamless access for individuals whose healthcare coverage doesn’t fall under standard statutory or private insurance models.
This update isn’t limited to the Federal Police. According to Gematik, the “Differently insured” option may soon extend to employees of other federal and state institutions as their respective payers and medical care providers integrate with the TI. This suggests a phased rollout of the digital healthcare infrastructure across the entire public sector.
Implications for Future Healthcare Integration
The successful integration of the eGK and e-prescription system for the Federal Police demonstrates the viability of the TI for specialized groups. This paves the way for similar implementations within other organizations, potentially streamlining healthcare access for a wider range of citizens. The move also highlights the importance of adaptable digital infrastructure capable of accommodating diverse insurance and employment scenarios.
As the TI continues to evolve, further enhancements and integrations are anticipated, solidifying Germany’s position at the forefront of digital healthcare innovation.
