The Chinese Sany group, which is currently among the world leaders in the construction of heavy equipment, is considering setting up a solar panel manufacturing plant in Madagascar.
The vice president of the group met yesterday Andry Rajoelina in Iavoloha, both parties discussed the detailed rules of the implementation of this project. During his trip to China last September during the Forum for Sino-African Cooperation (FOCAC), Andry Rajoelina visited a multinational industrial park located in Hunan province.
Currently, most solar equipment on the global market is manufactured in China. China’s solar panel is still essential. The Chinese have invested heavily over the past fifteen years in very large factories that allow them to mass produce, and therefore have lower production costs than others.
As one of the main producers of quartz, from which silicon is extracted for the photovoltaic panels needed to produce solar energy, Madagascar has a trump card in this industry. China is the largest importer of quartz from Madagascar according to statistics from Word Integrate Trade Solution.
Sany is present in several countries in southern Africa: South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Over the past three decades, the group has expanded its operations into a wide range of fields, including construction, mining, port machinery, oil drilling, as well as renewable wind energy systems.
In Madagascar, we are still in the project phase of building an industrial unit to produce solar panels in the Fianarantsoa region. A project that, according to an established source, appears in the presidential program “Plan Emergence Madagascar” (PEM).
