As night falls, their silhouettes fade into the darkness that gradually settles on Jemaa El-Fna Square, the vibrant heart of Marrakech, Morocco. A little away from the center of this immense square lined with a multitude of stands, several families – almost exclusively women – have chosen to gather. Mats and blankets are spread out on the ground, in the shade of fruit stalls selling fresh, sweet juices. Since the violent earthquake which devastated the famous tourist town, these residents of the medina, the old town, are too afraid to return home and prefer to spend another night outside, on this square rocked on this Saturday evening by a pleasant late summer breeze.
