Kochi: A native of Tamil Nadu has bravely caught Mariarputham Johnson (54), a thief who has been disturbing the residents of Kochi for years. On Monday morning, Kanthaswamy caught Mariarpootham with a machete after entering his house on Kalur Kattukaran line. He was later handed over to the police by the locals.

Kanthaswamy, an officer of IGNOU, conquered Mariarpoota by cutting with a knife but not holding him. ‘I live alone and yesterday I woke up when I heard a noise in my sleep,’ says Kanthaswamy. ‘I jumped up and asked who it was and grabbed him. But he pulled me out to escape. Halfway down the stairs, he hit his head with something. I realized later that it was cut with a knife.’

‘By the time I got outside, all my neighbors came out after hearing my screams. He bit my hand and scratched it but didn’t catch it. By that time, the neighboring family arrived and caught the thief. I have only been living here for a year. It is now known that Mariarpootam is a regular thief in this area. Kanthaswamy added, “I am afraid that she will also come here.”

Screwdrivers, pickaxes and wire cutters were organized from Kanthaswamy’s neighboring houses. After being caught, Putham told the police that he managed to enter Kanthaswamy’s house after trying to enter three nearby houses. The locals demand that he should not be released again. North sub-inspector C. Sreekumar, who is investigating the case, told Mathrubhumi.com that detailed evidence has been collected and strong charges will be imposed.
