Eating beetles and insects to be allowed in Singapore soon?- Food Industry Review

by time news

Singapore:

The Government of Singapore has sought an opinion from the Department of Food and Animal Feed Industry regarding the approval of insects for human consumption and animal feed in Singapore.

If this is allowed, species such as beetles, moths and bees can be consumed by humans living in Singapore. A local newspaper reported that these insects can be eaten directly or fried.

Singapore’s food industry has received related procedures from countries such as the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Thailand, which have allowed the consumption of insects as food.

A spokesperson for the country’s food department said that a thorough scientific study has been carried out and it has been assessed that certain species of insects can be allowed to be consumed as food.

Recently the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has been promoting the establishment of commercial insect farms for human consumption and animal feed.
