Aussie boxing champion Ebanie bridges has spoken candidly about the profound impact she’s had on the life of British boxing icon Kell Brook, who recently publicly credited her with “saving his life.” The couple, who welcomed their first child, Ezerra Ray, earlier this year, have offered a rare glimpse into their relationship and the power of shared vulnerability in overcoming personal demons.
A Lifeline in the Darkness
Brook, 39, publicly acknowledged Bridges’ support last month, stating she “saved his life.” This revelation came as Brook prepares for his return to the ring in February against Eisa Al Dah, a bout originally intended to feature the late Ricky Hatton. The former world champion’s openness about his struggles with addiction and mental health has resonated deeply, notably given the tragic loss of Hatton, who also battled similar issues and died in September at the age of 46.
Speaking to Fox Sports Australia, Bridges expressed her gratitude for Brook’s public acknowledgment.”It made me feel appreciated and it was just lovely to hear that, and for him to make that public,” she said.
Facing a Similar Fate
Bridges believes Brook was on a risky path before their relationship. “The way he was headed with his lifestyle, addiction and mental health issues, there was high chances he would end up like Ricky Hatton,” she explained. Those close to Brook have reportedly echoed this sentiment, telling Bridges that her presence was crucial to his continued well-being.
“Everyone around him has told me that if it wasn’t for you I don’t think Kell would still be here,” Bridges shared. She articulated the transformative power of intervention, stating, “When you pull someone out of darkness and away from the anchors of addiction, and help them build a new life, I guess it is saving them.”
Bridges attributes her ability to support Brook to her own past battles with mental health and addiction. “I had the knowledge and tools to help brook because of my own struggles… growing up,” she stated. This shared understanding fostered a unique connection, allowing her to provide the support Brook desperately needed.
The “Blonde bomber” emphasized the importance of seeking help and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. “I want people [who are struggling] to understand that you’re not alone, and you can’t get better on your own,” she urged.”You need help and support and to believe in yourself – and believe recovery is possible. Talk to people, find recovery centres and meetings. Get the help and do the work because recovery is possible and mental health problems aren’t something you should keep to yourself.”
A return to the ring with Purpose
Brook’s upcoming fight will benefit the newly established Ricky Hatton Foundation, a testament to his commitment to supporting others facing similar challenges. He expressed a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude for his family. “I have got a beautiful son, he is my pride and joy,” Brook said. “I am in control of my life, I am excited, I am clear… I am happy-go-lucky.”
He credits Bridges with helping him rediscover himself. “I do things with Ebanie and my son and see different parts of the world. I have found myself. Before, I didn’t know what was going on.Today I have got a purpose to live. I’m in god’s hands, and I feel in a vrey good place.”
Brook was effusive in his praise for Bridges, stating, “She got me out of that darkness. She saved my life, really and truthfully. She is so armed with the knowledge and been thru a lot of things herself in her own battles in life, and she has guided me to where I am today – and that is clean and sober and living a beautiful life. This is what is meant to be…mentally I am in the best place I’ve ever been in my life.”
