The European Central Bank is now asking the population what the euro notes should look like in the future. Everybody can participate. Which seven ideas made it onto the “shortlist”?

Now the population should give their opinion: The European Central Bank (ECB) wants to redesign the appearance of the euro banknotes – and is asking all interested parties from now until August 31 on the ECB website for their assessment of seven possible topics for the Depictions on the bills. These are intended to replace the abstract bridges, gates and windows previously seen on euro money. At the same time, a polling institute is to ask the same questions to the citizens of the euro area in a representative sample.

There are still no concrete representations for the bills to be seen, only rather abstract upper groups. These were drawn up by an advisory body and approved by the Governing Council of the ECB. Citizens are now asked to give their assessment of this “shortlist” of seven topics based on various criteria. Then, in a design competition, concrete drafts are produced, which are again to be discussed in public. The Governing Council is expected to vote on the drafts in 2026. Then it could take another two to three years until the notes are printed and in circulation.
