Edelweiss Air Celebrates 30 Years of Swiss Flair and Competitive Skies

Edelweiss Air, Switzerland’s premier leisure airline, is marking three decades of operation, a journey that began with a single MD83 aircraft and a vision to offer Swiss hospitality at competitive prices. From its inaugural flight on February 10, 1996, to its current status as a member of the Lufthansa Group, Edelweiss has carved a unique niche in the European aviation landscape.

A Bold Start Against Established Giants

The seeds of Edelweiss were sown in October 1995, with plans to launch a charter airline challenging the dominance of Swissair subsidiaries Crossair and Balair/CTA. Founded by Nikolaus Grob, a former Swissair captain, the airline secured participation from Kuoni, a leading tour operator at the time. Initially, the strategy focused on short and medium-haul routes, with long-haul flights not immediately in the plans.

“Edelweiss started 30 years ago with an MD83 aircraft called ‘Arosa’ and typical Swiss service,” a company release stated. The airline aimed to differentiate itself through competitive pricing and a distinctly Swiss experience.

The “Arosa” Takes Flight: A Touch of Swiss Tradition

The first Edelweiss aircraft, an MD83 with 167 seats, was christened “Arosa” by TV presenter Sandra Studer – though the christening wasn’t without a minor hiccup, as she reportedly struggled to get the cork out of the bottle. The inaugural flight connected passengers to Mediterranean seaside resorts and major European cities like London and Vienna.

The commitment to Swiss identity extended to the cabin crew, who were outfitted in costumes reminiscent of iconic Swiss characters like Heidi, Geissenpeter, and Alpöhi. Passengers were also treated to traditional Swiss snacks, including sausage/cheese salad and Toni yoghurt. A senior official noted the airline’s early focus on creating a memorable and authentically Swiss experience.

Growth, Innovation, and Lufthansa Integration

Over the years, Edelweiss expanded its fleet and route network. In May 2015, the airline celebrated its 20th anniversary with a striking marketing campaign featuring a zeppelin adorned with the Edelweiss livery flying over various Swiss cities.

Since 2008, Edelweiss has operated as a sister company of Swiss International Air Lines and a member of the Lufthansa Group, benefiting from the scale and resources of one of the world’s leading airline alliances. As of the end of 2024, the airline employs 1,420 individuals, including 345 cockpit crew members, 826 cabin crew, and 249 ground staff. The current fleet comprises 15 Airbus A320s, 3 A340s, and 4 A350s, including the Airbus A350 named “Piz Palü.”

Looking Ahead

Edelweiss Air’s journey from a small charter airline to a respected member of a global aviation group is a testament to its commitment to innovation, customer service, and a uniquely Swiss brand identity. The airline continues to evolve, adapting to the changing demands of the travel market while remaining true to its roots. Martin Liebrich currently heads the Zurich Unterland department, leading the airline into its next chapter.
