The extension of government measures, which led to price reductions in the food sector as well, was proposed by the president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, Yiannis Hatzitheodosiou, who described the government’s intervention as positive.

He was, at the same time, in favor of the POS and cash register interface measure, however highlighting the problems that exist. In this context, he underlined that the extension given was necessary, and possibly even more time would be required, in order to overcome the problems and complete the process, given that, as he said, only 5-6 thousand connections can be made every day.

Mr. Hatzitheodosiou mentioned that this is a new system, which also presents problems from the providers’ side, as many of the banks’ POS are currently unable to interface with the cash registers, while in many cases terminals are not granted to professionals who have debts.

He also pointed out that there are special problems for some sectors, such as catering, where today businesses are asked to upgrade, while in June they will need to change their cash registers.

“We are in favor of expanding the use of plastic money. But this cannot be done under the weight of threats,” said the president, referring to the fines.
