Cairo Metro Expansion: A Multi-Line Approach
The core of the expansion focuses on Cairo, with meaningful developments planned for multiple lines. The fourth line is slated to reach Al-Rehab City and the New Administrative Capital, further extending to Al-Fardous City and Al-Hosary Square. A second phase will connect 6th of October City to Cairo, with feasibility studies underway for a light rail link to the Administrative Capital. additionally, extending the first phase of the fourth line to Hosary Square in 6th of October City is also under consideration.
A sixth metro line is in the planning stages, designed to link previously underserved areas. This line will run from Al-Khos, through Deir Al-Malak, Al-Demerdash, Al-Abbasiya, and Al-Sayyeda Aisha stations, ultimately reaching New Maadi.A 3.4 km spur will connect a satellite area to the Umrah workshop in Tora Al-Balad, with a projected capacity to transport 1.5 million passengers daily. Plans also include a connection to northern Cairo via a monorail running east of the Nile.
Connecting Cairo to Key Destinations
Beyond expanding the network’s reach, the ministry is prioritizing improved connectivity to vital hubs.A study is underway to establish a direct link from Heliopolis Station on the third metro line to Cairo International Airport, a 7.5 km route featuring five underground stations: Heliopolis, Hegaz, Military College, Sheraton District, and Cairo Airport. “A memorandum of understanding was signed with a consortium of companies to implement Phase 4C of the third line,” according to a ministry release.
First Metro Line Extension to Al-Marj and Shebin Al-Qanater
A new 19 km extension of the first metro line is underway, stretching from Al-Marj to Shibin Al-Qanater. This project, initiated after signing a memorandum of understanding for consulting services, will feature 14 stations and serve as an choice to the existing 23 July – Shibin El Qanater railway line. The route will primarily be at surface level, with potential construction of bridges or tunnels at key traffic intersections.
Alexandria Metro: A Historic First
In a landmark development, Alexandria will receive its first metro line, marking the first time the rapid transit system extends beyond Greater Cairo. The Alexandria Metro’s first phase will run from Misr Station to Abu Qir, spanning 21.7 km with a mix of surface (6.5 km) and elevated (15.2 km) sections.
