Eastern Illinois Volleyball Poised for OVC Tournament Run, Faces Lindenwood in First Round

Eastern Illinois University volleyball enters the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) tournament as the top seed, aiming to defend their 2023 title and build upon a remarkable regular season. The Panthers will face Lindenwood University on Thursday, November 23rd, at 4:00 p.m. CT, with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Monday.

Panthers Aim to Continue Dominance

Eastern Illinois (21-7, 15-3 OVC) has quickly become a force in the conference under first-year Head Coach Ryan Millar. Despite being predicted to finish 8th in the preseason poll, the Panthers secured their fourth regular season title – and second as co-champions, sharing the crown with Morehead State – after sweeping the Eagles last week to claim the tiebreaker. This success marks the eighth time in program history the team has reached 20+ wins, and they boast an impressive 9-0 record at home, their best regular season home record since 2013.

“The team’s resilience and dedication have been truly exceptional this season,” a senior official stated. “To overcome preseason expectations and achieve this level of success speaks volumes about the players and coaching staff.”

Key Players Driving Eastern Illinois’ Success

The Panthers’ success is built on a foundation of strong individual performances. Emma Schroeder leads the OVC in blocks with 106 total blocks (1.13 per set), anchoring the defense. Ariadna Pereles ranks second in the conference with 519 assists (4.99 per set), orchestrating the offense. On the attack, Destiny Walker is second in the OVC with 392 kills (4.04 per set), while Katie Kopshever contributes 295 kills (3.17 per set).

However, the offensive engine truly runs through Catalina Rochaix, who leads the OVC with an impressive 1066 assists (10.77 per set). Other key contributors include preseason player to watch Lilli Amets, who has totaled 266.5 points and 234 kills, and Anaya Rawlinson, with 93 blocks. Tori Mohesky has also been a consistent threat with a team-leading 37 service aces.

Lindenwood Looks to Spoil the Party

Lindenwood (11-15, 7-11 OVC) enters the tournament on a mixed note, having secured a victory over Little Rock after a five-match losing streak. Coached by Will Condon, in his ninth season, the Lions feature a young roster led by sophomore Autumn Bax, who has recorded 336 kills. Ashley Geluck follows with 262 kills, and Amelia Thro directs the offense with 532 assists.

Defensively, Lindenwood relies on Dana Grib, the OVC leader in digs with 423, and Jade Roth, who ranks in the top ten in blocks with 78. The Lions lead the OVC in opponent digs with 13.35 per set and rank fourth in hitting percentage, opponent assists, and team assists.

Recent History and Tournament Outlook

The all-time series between Eastern Illinois and Lindenwood is tied 4-4, but the Panthers swept the Lions in both conference openers this season, winning both matches 3-1. Rochaix was dominant in those matchups, totaling 90 assists, while Walker produced 20 kills in the first game. Last year, however, Lindenwood swept Eastern Illinois in both contests.

The OVC tournament bracket features several compelling matchups. No. 2 Morehead State will face No. 7 SIUE at 10 a.m. CT, followed by No. 3 Southern Indiana versus No. 6 Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. CT. No. 4 Southeast Missouri will take on No. 5 Little Rock at 7 p.m. CT. The winners of the first round will compete in the semifinals on Monday, November 24th, with the championship match scheduled for Tuesday, November 25th, at 6 p.m. CT. All tournament games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Eastern Illinois will undoubtedly be favored in their first-round matchup against Lindenwood, but the Lions’ defensive prowess and Bax’s offensive capabilities present a challenge. The Panthers’ ability to control the net with Schroeder and capitalize on Rochaix’s playmaking will be crucial as they pursue another OVC championship title.
