El Niño Forecast to Drive Milder India Winter and Global Heat

A strengthening El Niño event is driving global temperatures near record levels, threatening a milder winter across India, severe agricultural stress in Gujarat, and extreme weather worldwide through 2027.

According to assessments from the World Meteorological Organization, the current El Niño ranks among the strongest events recorded since 1950. United Nations meteorologists warn that sea surface temperatures are expected to climb. They will reach an average of 3.8 degrees above normal, pushing the phenomenon toward its peak strength during the winter months. The United Nations weather agency has specifically warned that the 2026 El Niño event could stand as one of the most powerful occurrences observed since 1950. Meteorologist Ryan Maue shared a global climate map. The map showed the planet appearing almost entirely red. He noted that the planetary climate phenomenon can maintain its maximum strength throughout the winter season. It will drive widespread heat across nearly every part of the globe, except the United States. Scientists emphasize that these ongoing weather disruptions are closely connected to climate change and global warming, which continuously alter weather patterns worldwide.

El Niño Drives Extreme Global Weather Disruptions Across Four Continents

Indonesia is currently battling its most severe wildfire season since 2015, with dry conditions leaving at least 895,657 hectares scorched—more than double the land area lost during non-El Niño years.

Warm waters have fueled a hyper-active hurricane season featuring 22 named storms, 12 hurricanes, and 10 major systems. Conversely, the Atlantic Ocean has remained unusually quiet, with upper-level wind shear keeping storm formation heavily suppressed.

Heat Soars and Agricultural Pressures Mount in Gujarat

In Bharuch district, maximum October temperatures have climbed past 38 degrees Celsius, up from 35 degrees during the same period last year. Because the southwest monsoon withdrew early and left skies entirely clear, uninterrupted sunlight has directly heated the air through sensible heat flux rather than evaporating soil moisture.

For sugarcane crops, the watering interval has compressed from 15 days down to just 5 to 6 days, which has increased fuel and operational expenses. Agricultural experts note that the extreme heat is causing flower drop in cotton, chili, and tomato crops, while creating ideal breeding conditions for sap-sucking pests like thrips and whiteflies.

India Faces Unusually Warm Winter Through February

International climate models indicate that the Pacific phenomenon will remain entrenched through February 2027, with its maximum atmospheric impact expected to peak in December. South Asia is projected to experience notably subdued winter conditions, with maximum and minimum temperatures running above normal from November through January. Furthermore, the World Meteorological Organization has officially forecast that the impacts. The El Niño cycle will reach their highest surface levels during the period spanning from November 2026 through January 2027.

While northern plains regions may experience brief cold snaps driven by occasional western disturbances and northern winds, meteorologists caution that extended periods of severe cold are unlikely. The World Meteorological Organization emphasizes that these shifting thermal patterns reflect ongoing climate change drivers interacting directly with the tropical Pacific cycle.
