Elder Scrolls TV Series: Todd Howard Hints at Possibility

Fallout Season 2 Looms as Bethesda Weighs Future of Elder Scrolls TV Adaptation

Bethesda’s popular Fallout franchise is expanding its presence on streaming television, but a live-action adaptation of The Elder Scrolls remains a distant prospect. The success of the upcoming Fallout Season 2 on Prime Video is prompting internal discussions about the viability of further adaptations, though a series based on The Elder Scrolls is not currently in development.

The renewed interest stems from the unexpectedly large impact of the Fallout show on the franchise as a whole. A senior industry official stated, “The impact of the show on Fallout as a franchise has been bigger than I expected, so it does make you think like, ‘Hey, is there a path?’” However, the official cautioned against expecting an Elder Scrolls series in the near future, adding, “But nothing today… [and] I’m willing to say ‘no’ for a decade.”

The journey to bring Fallout to the screen was a lengthy one, with discussions beginning as early as 2008 following the release of Fallout 3. It ultimately took over a decade to realize the live-action vision. This protracted development process underscores the challenges inherent in adapting complex video game properties.

Weighing Adaptation Potential

The official explained that Fallout was deemed a more suitable candidate for adaptation due to its thematic resonance. “I thought Fallout was more suitable as an adaptation because it had ‘more to say in its genre,’” they noted. This suggests that Bethesda is prioritizing projects with strong narrative potential and cultural relevance.

While remaining open to the possibility of an Elder Scrolls adaptation, the official emphasized a cautious approach. “I can’t rule in or rule out an Elder Scrolls thing in the future,” they said, but reiterated that no concrete plans are currently underway.

Wolfenstein Series Remains Under Wraps

Bethesda is also developing a live-action series based on its Wolfenstein franchise for Prime Video. However, the official deferred questions regarding the Wolfenstein show to MachineGames, the Bethesda-owned developer responsible for the recent Wolfenstein game reboots. “It wasn’t my place to talk about it,” the official stated, adding that all updates will originate from MachineGames.

Elder Scrolls 6 Still Years Away

Beyond television adaptations, Bethesda is also navigating the complexities of game development. The highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6 remains in the early stages of production. The official admitted to expressing regret over announcing the sequel in 2018, stating that the game is “still a long way off.” This acknowledgment underscores the challenges of managing fan expectations and delivering on ambitious projects.

The success of Fallout on Prime Video may open doors for future adaptations within the Bethesda portfolio, but for now, fans of The Elder Scrolls will have to remain patient. The long-term viability of an Elder Scrolls series hinges on finding a compelling narrative and ensuring it aligns with the franchise’s established lore and fanbase expectations.
