Election Dates and Phases for Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Everything You Need to Know

Lok Sabha elections are held in 7 phases for 543 constituencies. All the votes cast in the Lok Sabha elections, the four state assembly elections and the assembly by-elections will be counted and the results announced on June 4, 2024. Seven Phases:

  • Polling for 102 constituencies will be held on April 19.
  • The second phase of polling in 89 constituencies will be held on April 26.
  • Phase 3 polling for 94 constituencies will be held on May 7.
  • Phase 4 polling for 96 constituencies will be held on May 13.
  • Phase 5 polling for 49 constituencies will be held on May 20.
  • The 6th phase of polling for 57 constituencies will be held on May 25.
  • The final and 7th phase of polling for 57 constituencies will be held on June 1.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: Vote registration will be held in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in a single phase on April 19. The by-election to the Vilavankot Legislative Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu will also be held on April 19. Election procedures in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry:

  • Nomination Filing Begins – March 20
  • Nomination Deadline – March 27
  • Scrutiny of Nominations – March 28
  • Last date for withdrawal of nominations: March 30
  • Polling – April 19

4 State Legislative Assembly Elections: Along with the Lok Sabha elections, four state assembly elections are to be held in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim. Date Details:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Polling – May 13, 2024
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Polling – April 19, 2024
  • Sikkim: Polling – April 19, 2024
  • Odisha: May 13 – 28 Legislative Assembly Constituencies | May 20 – 35 volumes) | May 25 – 42 Blocks – June 1 – 42 Blocks)

Information released by Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar: The tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha ends on 16 June 2024. Elections will be held to form the new Lok Sabha. Keeping in view the provisions of the Constitution, the Election Commission of India has made elaborate arrangements for conducting the elections to the 18th Lok Sabha in a free manner. Also, the Election Commission is going to hold elections for the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim as their terms are coming to an end.

  • The commission consulted with all parties to conduct elections for the world’s largest democracy.
  • Elections are planned accordingly after assessing various dimensions of conducting elections to 4 state legislatures and 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.
  • The Election Commission held 5 zonal meetings at Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Ahmedabad and Lucknow. It was attended by Chief Electoral Officers and State Police Coordination Officers.
  • The Commission has visited several States / Union Territories to review the election preparations. During this visit, the commission held discussions with the political parties, enforcement agencies and senior officers of all the districts.
  • Necessary security arrangements have been made for fair conduct of elections in all states.
  • People without voter ID card can vote with 12 types of alternative documents.
  • The Election Commission has taken steps to ensure that all eligible voters who have completed the age of 18 years vote.
  • The authorities have been instructed to pay extra attention to areas with low voter turnout and take measures to increase voter turnout.
  • The total number of voters in the country as on 01.01.2024 is 96.88 crore as per the final published electoral roll.
  • The Rules of Conduct of Elections have come into force immediately after publication of the Election Notification. It applies to the Central Government and all State Union Territory Governments.
  • The Election Commission has appealed to all concerned, especially political parties and candidates, to uphold democratic traditions during election campaigns.
  • The Election Commission has requested all voters to strengthen the country’s democratic ethos by visiting the polling centers thoroughly and exercising their right to vote properly.
