Following the approval of the request for inscription of Malhoun on the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, the Kingdom will have introduced 13 elements of its heritage into this list, thus maintaining itself at the head of African countries, indicates the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication in a press release.

Mali and Algeria come second with 8 items for each country, followed by Malawi (6 items), Zambia, Nigeria, Egypt (5 items for each country), Ethiopia (4 items) and Côte d’Ivoire and Mauritania (3 elements for each country), reports the ministry.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, whose 18th session was held on Wednesday in Botswana, approved the request of the Kingdom of Morocco to include Malhoun in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Humanity.

According to the file presented to the Committee, Malhoun is an ancient Moroccan poetic-musical expression. Born in the region of Tafilalet, in the south-east of Morocco, this art first developed within the zaouïas of the region, then gradually spread and reached the large cities where it was mainly welcomed and interpreted within the guilds of artisans of ancient cities.
