Sologamy, the act of marrying oneself, is the new social phenomenon based on inclusiveness. Fondazione Solares delle Arti brings Elena Ketra’s digital performance to Videocittà from 13 to 16 July. She explains the artist: “It is the awareness of oneself and of one’s abilities, strength and beauty, beyond uniforming aesthetic, social and sexual diktats. Social inclusion starts first of all from ourselves”. It is only recently that the term ‘sologamy’ has appeared but still little is known, at least in Italy, of what has all the connotations of an authentic contemporary social phenomenon. The same term still does not have an official definition even in Treccani, the most famous Italian encyclopaedia.

In reality, sologamy is a practice that has existed for decades in Japan, and is based on an intimate philosophy aimed at taking care of the self and one’s inner well-being, in Kyoto there is also an agency that offers packages for ‘self-care’ weddings. wedding’ that are in great demand, especially by women. But not only that, she has made a shy guest appearance on the small screen within the series ‘Sex and the City’ and recently an Indian who moved on herself has caused international talk. The digital performance ‘Sologamy’ by the Vicenza artist Elena Ketra, who recently exhibited at the Madre Museum in Naples, will be presented by the Solares delle Arti Foundation, in collaboration with the Roman gallery Supermartek, in an international preview from 13 to 16 July at Videocittà, the Festival of vision and digital culture, at the Gazometer in Rome.

In the section dedicated to contemporary art called ‘Agorà Expo’, an area will be set up for the Sologamy project. Those who want to get married to themselves, entering their data thanks to a touchscreen, ‘by virtue of art and love’, will be able to do so with a certificate attesting to their sologamous marriage. This certificate, signed by the artist, is a unique work. Elena Ketra explains her poetics that inspired her thus: “Learning to love yourself is necessary in order to be able to freely love every other human being. It is the affirmation of one’s emotional independence, the awareness of oneself and one’s abilities, strength and beauty, beyond uniforming aesthetic, social and sexual diktats. Social inclusion starts first of all from ourselves”.

The first works around this concept date back to 2021, a series of mirrored plates on which a stylized multi-storey wedding cake is imprinted above which stands a female, male and neutral chess piece, and under the definition of the word sologamy, in dialogue with another work-mirror ‘Nontiscordardite’. The leitmotif of Elena Ketra’s research is female empowerment and social inclusion, placing the self as a person as the center of reflection, beyond gender stereotypes. This performance is the clearest and most sincere manifesto of it, as it exists only thanks to interaction and embraces all genres.
