Elon Musk Funnels Over $276 Million Into Republican Midterm Efforts

Elon Musk has funneled more than $276 million into Republican groups and his super PAC since July, building a turnout operation to help Republicans in the midterm elections as filing data highlights a sharply targeted strategy focused on competitive Senate and House races.

Federal campaign finance records trace a massive financial surge from the world’s richest person as the midterm elections approach, building an expansive political turnout machine. Musk has contributed more than $276 million to Republican groups and his super PAC since the start of July, according to filings analyzed by the New York Times. That total includes $158M directed to the Senate Leadership Fund and more than $76 million channeled into America PAC.

Federal Election Commission filings track America PAC spending across battleground states

Data compiled from daily Federal Election Commission processing reveals that America PAC deployed $24.8 million out of $31 million total spent on candidates directly into seven key U.S. Senate contests as of October 6. These battleground races represent critical pick-up opportunities or defensive holds for both parties.

The current operational footprint differs significantly from the 2024 presidential cycle. America PAC registered with the FEC in May 2024 and ultimately spent $261 million that cycle, with roughly 95 percent of its funding supplied directly by Musk. By contrast, the $31 million spent on candidates through early October stands at about a third of the $85.9 million deployed by the exact same point in 2024, when the vast majority of resources targeted the presidential contest rather than Senate races.

Spending priorities have also shifted toward aggressive negative campaigning. For every dollar spent supporting a Republican candidate this cycle, more than two went toward opposing a Democrat, a ratio that climbs to three-to-one in tight Senate races.

Targeted investments in Texas, Ohio, Michigan, and key House districts

Nowhere has the political action committee directed more capital than in Texas, where it deployed $6.3 million to support Republican Ken Paxton and attack Democrat James Talarico. Musk, who serves as chief executive officer of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, has resided in Texas since 2020 as his business empire expands across the state.

Beyond Texas, America PAC has poured $16.6 million into boosting Republicans in high-profile Senate contests, including races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, and Maine. Specific allocations include $3.7 million in the Ohio Senate race between Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Jon Husted, and $3.4 million in Michigan where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers.

Democrats seek small-dollar donations to counter Musk

Democratic organizations are using the billionaire's heavy financial footprint to mobilize small-dollar donors. This includes a blitz that Democrats are seeking to offset with appeals to their supporters to counter Musk’s money.

Similarly, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee launched appeals warning that Musk’s super PAC had already deployed more than $800,000 supporting legislative candidates in states where majorities in state capitals hang in the balance.

“While the Supreme Court creates new loopholes for billionaires and special interests to prop up their puppets, we’re going to continue building a movement to take back power for working people. Because Big Money is nothing compared to People Power.”

Broader political expenditures and upcoming financial disclosures

Musk’s political giving extends well beyond his own super PAC. Musk also contributed $5 million to a super PAC supporting Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign for Ohio governor.

While Musk has given roughly $50 million to America PAC since the conclusion of the 2024 presidential race, a meaningful share of those post-election funds went toward an unsuccessful April 2025 Wisconsin state Supreme Court election. In that race, Musk-backed candidate Brad Schimel lost to Susan Crawford, a circuit court judge supported by Democrats.
