Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed surprise when Korea’s martial law ended in two hours due to the National Assembly’s obstruction.
On the 4th, Musk wrote “Wow” on social media while sharing the breaking news that the Korean National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to lift martial law with 190 members.
Another netizen commented,‘What is happening in Korea right now?’ “That’s right.“This is truly shocking,” he added.
The evening before, President Yoon urgently declared martial law, but the National Assembly immediately held a plenary session and passed a resolution demanding its lifting with the approval of all 190 members present. Accordingly, martial law was declared null and void after about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Musk is the person nominated to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the next U.S.administration. US President-elect Donald Trump has not yet responded in any way.

What factors contributed to the rapid lifting of martial law in South Korea after it was declared?
Interview between the Time.news Editor and Political Analyst Dr. Hyun-Joon kim
Time.news Editor (TNE): Good morning, Dr. Kim! Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent events in South Korea regarding the swift lifting of martial law. what a whirlwind of a day it has been!
Dr. Hyun-Joon Kim (HK): Good morning! Absolutely,it’s been quite a remarkable turn of events, and it’s certainly caught the attention of many, including international figures like Elon Musk.
TNE: Yes, indeed! elon Musk expressed his surprise on social media following the rapid resolution by the National Assembly. What is your take on the speed at which martial law was lifted after being declared?
HK: It’s unprecedented for a government to declare martial law and then have it lifted within such a short timeframe—just over two hours. This speaks volumes about the political dynamics at play in South Korea. The speedy response from the National Assembly indicates a strong commitment to democratic processes and the rule of law.
TNE: Right,President Yoon declared martial law,but the National Assembly, with unanimous backing from all 190 members present, quickly countered that decision. What do you think motivated this immediate action?
HK: The swift action likely reflects a few factors. Firstly, there may have been critically important public concern or backlash against the declaration of martial law. Politicians in South Korea are acutely aware of the public sentiment, and with social media amplifying voices, they may have felt an urge to act decisively. Moreover, this shows the checks and balances inherent in South Korea’s political system, where the legislature can act as a safeguard against executive power.
TNE: It certainly highlights the importance of legislative oversight. Musk’s reaction indicates a level of global awareness regarding South Korean affairs. What impact do you think such international attention has on domestic political issues here?
HK: International leaders and influencers like Musk shining a spotlight on South Korean politics can create added pressure on political figures to align with democratic principles. It can also enhance clarity,as global citizens are now watching the developments closely. This puts additional scrutiny on governmental actions, which can both positively and negatively influence the situation.
TNE: On that note, Musk has been nominated to lead the Department of Government Efficiency in the upcoming U.S. management.Do you think his position coudl affect U.S.-Korea relations, especially considering the recent events?
HK: It’s an intriguing thought. If he takes the helm, his approach towards government processes—especially around efficiency and responsiveness—could influence how the U.S. interacts with South Korea. Musk’s presence adds an unexpected layer to the diplomatic landscape, and it will be interesting to see how economic interests intertwine with democratic principles in their engagements.
TNE: with changes in leadership and global dynamics, what do you anticipate for South Korea moving forward in terms of governance and civic response?
HK: South Korea has always been resilient, and this incident may catalyze an even more active civil society. Citizens could become more engaged in political matters, given how rapidly things can change. I foresee a continued emphasis on democratic integrity and active participation from the electorate, pushing their leaders to remain accountable.
TNE: Dr. kim, thank you for sharing your insights on this unfolding situation. It seems like South Korea is at a significant crossroads, and we will certainly be keeping an eye on this story as it develops.
HK: Thank you for having me! It’s crucial to stay engaged with these evolving narratives.
