Neuralink, the company founded by Elon Musk, has obtained authorization to carry out human trials with its revolutionary and controversial implantable technology. This advance promises that the human brain and computers can interact with each other in a new way, offering alternatives to people with paralysis, visual impairment, hearing impairment or inability to speak.

Neuralink’s technology focuses on creating a wireless, fully implantable brain-computer interface (BCI), which will allow individuals to interact with electronic devices and computing systems using only their thoughts. This device has the potential to transform the way humans communicate through artificial intelligence and computers.

“We are pleased to announce that recruitment is open for our first-in-human clinical trial!” Neuralink said via X. “If you have quadriplegia due to a cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), you may qualify. ” the company announced about its PRIME (short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) study.

After receiving approval from an independent review board, the biotechnology company Neuralink will conduct the first clinical trial in humans and is open to recruiting participants. This initial phase of testing will focus on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of Neuralink brain implants in people with disabilities, such as paralysis, visual impairment, and hearing impairment.

This experimental device, which has been the subject of study for six years, aims to allow people with paralysis to control the cursor of a computer or keyboard using their mind. The installation of this chip will be carried out using a next-generation surgical robot developed by Neuralink, which will place it in the region of brain tissue responsible for movement.

“The first human patient will soon receive a Neuralink device. Ultimately, this has the potential to restore movement to the entire body,” Musk said. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking had this,” said the X CEO.

However, the development and implementation of this technology was involved in the deaths of several primates. Neuralink previously conducted testing on animals, which drew criticism and prompted government investigations due to the number of animals involved in the testing.

Musk acknowledged the death of some monkeys used in research. However, he denied that these deaths were a direct consequence of the implants and stated that the researchers had selected animals that were already close to dying.

“No monkeys have died as a result of a Neuralink implant. “First, with our first implants, to minimize the risk to healthy monkeys, we chose terminal monkeys (which were already on the verge of death),” Musk explained on September 10.

So far, it is unknown when the human trial will begin. For now, Neuralink is in the recruiting phase and will “announce more information soon,” the company said.
