Elon University’s men’s club rugby team is poised to capitalize on a triumphant season by hosting a significant regional playoff tournament at home on November 8th, a advancement that reflects the university’s growing commitment to expanding its role as a venue for competitive athletics. The tournament, scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Comer Field, will feature 14-15 teams vying for a chance to qualify for nationals.
A Growing trend of On-Campus Events
The decision to host the playoffs aligns with a broader strategy within Elon university’s department of Campus Recreation to attract more games and tournaments to campus. According to a senior official, the department is actively encouraging other teams, including both volleyball squads and the women’s ultimate team, to pursue hosting opportunities. “We’re really hopeful it will open those opportunities,” the official stated.
Boosting University Profile Through Athletics
Luke Wood, president of the men’s club rugby team, believes hosting the playoffs will significantly raise Elon’s profile. “Being able to hold more crucial sports events at home will actually make us more popular as a university and put us on the map,” Wood explained, referencing the success of a 16-team tournament held last spring.
Passion for the Game Drives Initiative
Ivie Shelton, assistant director of Campus Recreation for Sports Programs, revealed her personal connection to the sport, stemming from her time as president of the mixed martial arts club at Oklahoma State University, where she closely collaborated with the college rugby team. “While being at Oklahoma State University I worked very closely with the rugby team there, and I got to see some of their matches as well as hang out at their practices,” Shelton said. She added that the players and coaching staff are “super excited” about hosting the upcoming tournament.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
Despite the enthusiasm, hosting the tournament presents logistical hurdles. Wood highlighted the challenge of field availability, noting that the team currently has access to only one dedicated rugby field, while tournaments require at least two. “Reserving space was pretty difficult,” he admitted. He also acknowledged that attracting larger crowds to Elon’s sporting events remains an ongoing concern, but believes hosting the playoffs locally will encourage greater attendance from the community, friends, and family.
Home-Field Advantage and Centralized Location
Shelton emphasized the benefits of playing at home, stating it provides convenience for teams and a centralized location for competitors. “It makes it really easy for them, and also it tends to be a good centralized location for quite a few of the schools that we compete against,” Shelton said. The university’s existing staffing infrastructure for club sports and facilities also played a role in the decision.
Building a Reputation for Excellence
The decision to grant hosting rights was also influenced by the rugby team’s growing reputation and the dedication of its coaching staff, notably Ryan Bays, who has a long-standing connection to the club as both a former player and current coach. This isn’t the first time Elon has hosted a playoff event; last year, the team successfully hosted a seven-team tournament. This year’s event marks a significant step up, representing the first time Elon will host a 14-15 team regional playof
