Elton John’s 1989 hit “Sacrifice” has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, marking the legendary British songwriter’s first entry into the platform’s Billion Views Club.
The milestone video was directed by Alek Keshishian, who later helmed Madonna’s documentary Truth Or Dare.
Set to the track from his 22nd studio album, Sleeping With the Past, the visual stars model Yasmeen Ghauri and musician Chris Isaak as a couple whose relationship suffers a gradual breakdown, depicting its various stages through marital strain and separation to single parenthood.
Elton John Reaches Billion Views Milestone
When the track was released as the second single, it initially had modest chart success. It later peaked at No. 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1990. The song received renewed attention when it was reissued as a double A-side paired with Healing Hands
in 1990. That release spent five consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, giving the artist his first solo chart-topper in his home country.
Written alongside longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, the ballad was crafted while the artist envisioned a classic Southern soul ballad reminiscent of Percy Sledge, though the final arrangement ultimately embraced polished late-1980s synth-pop production. Davey Johnstone provided an understated, melodic guitar solo inspired by Hank Marvin of The Shadows. Songwriting partner Bernie Taupin described the lyrics as a mature counterweight to their early hits, particularly calling it a bookend to 1970’s idealistic Your Song, focusing on the rigors of adult love and the emotional fatigue of a collapsing relationship.
Decades later, the song reached a new generation of listeners when Australian electronic trio PNAU used the original vocal stem for the 2021 global hit Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)
with Dua Lipa. That mashup also incorporated melodies from Rocket Man,
Kiss the Bride,
and Where’s the Shoorah?

Catalog Expands With Anniversary Editions
Alongside the YouTube milestone, the artist has continued revisiting his catalog, recently announcing a 50th-anniversary edition of his 1975 album Rock Of The Westies. Earlier in the year, he also issued Elton John – The Remixes
for Record Store Day and expanded the Elton John Impact Awards initiative, which recognizes LGBTQ+ trailblazers and allies such as Chappell Roan, Melissa Etheridge, and Billie Jean King.
