Embrun Hospital to Undergo €40 Million Modernization, Staying Within City Limits

A comprehensive, €40 million renovation of the hospital in Embrun, France, will proceed within the existing city center, averting a planned relocation. The decision, solidified after concerns arose regarding potential flooding at a proposed new site, ensures continued access to vital healthcare for the region’s 15,000 residents and the influx of tourists.
In March 2022, then-Prime Minister Jean Castex pressed stakeholders to swiftly determine the future of the facility – either a full-scale rehabilitation or construction of a new hospital outside the city walls. The latter option gained traction until a critical flaw was discovered: the access road to the prospective new location was situated in a known flood zone.
Averting Relocation, Prioritizing Access
The hospital serves a significant population, catering to both permanent residents and the substantial number of tourists who visit the area. Maintaining the hospital’s central location was met with approval from the local community. “The hospital center therefore remains in town, to the satisfaction of the population,” a senior official stated.
The project will deliver a modern healthcare facility “worthy of the 21st century,” requiring a substantial investment of €40 million. The hospital is also being designed with consideration for its potential role in supporting events like the Games, though specific details regarding this integration remain undisclosed.
Complex Renovation, Collaborative Planning
Rehabilitating the hospital while keeping it operational presents a significant logistical challenge for architects, businesses, and medical personnel. The renovation is slated to span 36 months, preceded by a year-long study phase.
“In total, the work will be spread over 36 months and will begin after a year of study during which the city, the hospital and the architect will have to work in close collaboration to refine the ‘urban structure’ around the hospital,” explained the mayor of Embrun, Chantal Eyméoud. This collaborative approach will be crucial to minimizing disruption to patient care during the extensive construction period.
The anticipated completion date is set for mid-2026, marking the culmination of a project designed to secure the future of healthcare access in Embrun.
