Dr. Emily Andre has shared an update with her followers after she undergoes treatment after an ‘unexpected diagnosis’ of shingles, a condition that left her dealing with significant pain and a sudden physical rash.
The medical professional and public figure used her platform to detail the onset of her symptoms and the subsequent recovery process, aiming to turn a personal health scare into an educational moment for her community. After a week of targeted treatment, Andre reports that she is feeling “much, much better,” though some residual pain remains.
The diagnosis came as a surprise to the mother of three, who is married to singer Peter Andre. Although shingles is typically manageable for healthy adults, its sudden appearance can be alarming, particularly when the symptoms mimic other conditions before the characteristic rash emerges.
A sudden onset of symptoms
In a candid video shared with her followers, Andre described the confusing early stages of the infection. She noted that the initial signs were not visual, but rather sensory, beginning with “a pain and just odd sensations” located under her arm.
The situation evolved quickly, with a rash appearing on one side of her back a few days after the initial discomfort. “It’s definitely not something I expected to be dealing with,” Andre admitted, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these early warning signs.
Following her diagnosis, Andre underwent a week of treatment. While she expressed gratitude for the support of her followers, she noted that the road to full recovery is gradual. “I’ve still got a little bit of pain left, but feeling much, much better,” she shared, urging others to remain vigilant about their own health.

Understanding the mechanics of shingles
Drawing on her medical background (MBChB BSc), Andre provided a clear explanation of the condition, similarly known as herpes zoster. Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus—the same virus responsible for chickenpox.
Once a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus does not depart the body but remains dormant in the nerve tissues. If the immune system becomes temporarily weakened due to stress, age, or illness, the virus can reactivate and travel along nerve paths to the skin, resulting in the characteristic painful rash.
Andre highlighted a common point of confusion regarding the contagiousness of the condition. She clarified that while a person cannot “pass shingles” to another person, they can transmit the varicella zoster virus to someone who has never had chickenpox or has not been vaccinated, potentially causing that person to develop chickenpox.

Protecting vulnerable populations
A central part of Andre’s message was the need to protect those at higher risk of complications. Because the virus can be dangerous for individuals with compromised immunity, she urged those with active shingles to avoid contact with specific groups.
According to Andre, those who should avoid contact with an active shingles rash include:
- Pregnant women who have not previously had chickenpox.
- Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy.
- Newborn babies under one month of age.
By sharing her own experience, Andre hopes to encourage others to “listen to your body and get things checked if something doesn’t feel right,” noting that the timing of the diagnosis was far from ideal but served as a vital reminder of the unpredictability of health.

The Andre family, which includes their three children—Theo, Amelia and Arabella—as well as Peter’s children, Junior and Princess, has often shared glimpses of their domestic life. This latest update has resonated with fans, many of whom praised the doctor for her transparency regarding the physical and emotional toll of the illness.
