French Presidential Commemoration of the Landing in Provence
The text details President Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming visit to the Var region of France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied landing in Provence.
Events of the Commemoration:
Bouluris: Macron will visit the national cemetery in the morning to pay respects to fallen soldiers.
Toulon: In the afternoon, he will participate in an event commemorating the landing on the beaches of Mourillon. This will include a military parade featuring paratroopers, fighter jets, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
Bormes-les-Mimosas: As is tradition, Macron will also visit the city of Bormes-les-Mimosas to commemorate the liberation of the city by Allied forces.
Practical Considerations:
The selection of Toulon as the commemoration site was made for practical reasons, but the Elysee Palace acknowledges its historical significance as a primary objective of the landing.
The weather conditions will be taken into account, as strong winds could disrupt the planned events.
Additional Information:
Five French veterans of World War II and one foreigner will be decorated with the Legion of Honor by the President.
* The Elysee Palace clarifies that the fighter aircraft involved in the commemoration are part of the squadron that historically participated in the preparation of the landing in Provence.
